If there is absolutely no possibility that your car is involved then I would not contact your insurance co.

Most enquiries to them, even trivial ones, can end up being recorded on the big CUE insurance database.

The database is not supposed to be Big Brother but contains all claims, enquiries and also 'facts people have disclosed about themselves' and there is anecdotal evidence that it might be used by some companies to determine future premiums however, the merits of that is for another thread.

I suspect that this person is chancing their luck and playing Poirot with the red and silver paint but Good Luck.

    Hope this helps.

But if you are given any indication that they intend to claim against your insurance, then you should inform your insurance company immediately.

And that gives you an opportunity to get your side of the story in first.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Nope, nobody owns the rights to their own image being used in a non commercial way. So you can take a photograph or video of anyone in a public space and there is no legal comeback provided you aren't doing so for commercial reasons, so CCTV can record anything and everything from anywhere and everywhere within its scope..

However, if as a private householder you have not registered with the ICO and you have CCTV on your property, that CCTV can only record your own land.
If the scope of the cameras extends beyond the boundaries of your land, you then become classed as a data processor under the data protection act and must register as such.

There used to be an exemption for private CCTV recording areas adjacent to your house but this exemption was removed a few years ago.

We have CCTV on the front of our house.

Last year our local police officer had called on another matter and when advised about the cctv said that was handy to know and asked if it covered the road . If it did ,she said, they could use it for tracing vehicles.

No mention of any need to register etc.

I'd doubt individiual police officers would know anything about DPA implications of private CCTV use.

You have not had an incident, or claim or anything so forgot it. Otherwise, people would be going door to door telling people they had a prange and the claims lines would be full of "information only" claims.
