Not always, I have found when I have added my halifax card after a credit card DD finished, the payment was sent as a bill payment and not a direct debit, so now I send money to a friend and they send it straight back as its instant and then i withdraw and put it into the account I have used to pay my friend.

    Repeat each month.

It maybe worth noting that PayPal have removed the pay your account by DD option and no suggest you set up a payment to fund your PayPal account.

Can you explain in more details about this (so now I send money to a friend and they send it straight back as its instant and then i withdraw and put it into the account I have used to pay my friend. )

    I got confused.

A need DD for Halifax Bank requirement.
    A and B is friend.
B request money from A via Paypal (PP).
A's PP is "0". Then, A's PP sent money to B's PP.
A's PP now is -£10, so A's withdraw money from A's Halifax Bank.

Is that how it work as DD to fullfil Halifax requirement?

I sent money to my friend via my PayPal and as my PayPal balance is 0 it collects the money via DD. Same process can be used for any purchase you make and you are given PayPal as a payment option.

I assume you are trying to use paypal to satisfy the requirements of a bank account to have one or more direct debits. I have been working on this.

They way I do it is -

In my paypal account set up a bank account to fund it.

I can then send some money to someone (My wifes paypal account or another paypal account that I have in a different name). Alternativley you could buy something from somewhere that accepts paypal.

I click on the bank account i wish to fund this payment.

That payment will come out of the bank account as a direct debit.

I am not aware that you can set it up to do this automatically each month so it does require going into your paypal and doing it manually twice a month or whatever the requirements are.
  • Yes, main purpose is to use Paypal (PP) to satisfy the DD requirement of Tesco/Halifax.

I tried to sent money from my PP(where my PP balance is £0) to my wife's PP account, amount is £1.00.
Both account created in UK and have Halifax as bank.

It came out that my wife received only £0.77, as £0.23 is the PP fees.
    Sent by XX: £1.00
    Fee -negative £0.23
    Total: £0.77

Any idea you guys have this charges too? £0.23 is quite a lot.

    ... £0.23 is quite a lot.

I'd like to think that it is an idiot tax intended to discourage those stupid enough to draw PayPal's attention to those (in PP's view) abusing the system by making trivial transactions.

Your foolish actions are of the sort which directly led to Tesco withdrawing their very useful DD system. Now you (plural) are out to wreck the PayPal scheme, it would seem.

You must have set the transaction (or account) up to be funded by credit card, as the fees are, as per https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees:
Sending money to friends and family within the UK (in GBP):

Free when fully funded by the sender’s PayPal balance, bank account, debit card or prepaid card. If you use a credit card to send money, a fee of 3.4% + 20p applies.

The fees are only if you use your CREDIT CARD as the funding source for the transaction. If you use your BANK ACCOUNT as the funding source you shouldn't be hit with fees for sending money. See the following:
    https://www.paypal.com/gb/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-choose-and-change-my-payment-method-faq1754
    https://www.paypal.com/ca/webapps/mpp/popup/funding-mix-education

The alternative approach, which is much simpler than passing money around between family/friends, is to add funds to your PayPal wallet balance using your BANK ACCOUNT as the funding source. This function doesn't seem to work on their website, but does work through their android app. You pull money from your bank account TO PayPal using the DD mandate you set up and this counts as a DD for your monthly requirement
