BT end contract switch question - charge avoidance

Any help appreciated....
I am close to the end of my BT fibre contract but am struggling to find information as to when I can switch without incurring an early termination charge and also without rolling over into the next month with the huge jump in cost.
So - my 12 month introductory package is up for renewal on 3rd October, can anyone advise if I am able to arrange the switch to happen a week before that date without a hefty cancellation charge, or would they hit me for it? (ie are there any days of grace in the last few weeks or so? given I will be paying the monthly fee across all 12 months).
Or do I need to make sure that the switch happens a few days post cancellation and bite the bullet with rolling over to their silly out of contract costs in order to avoid the cancellation charge?
This has confused me each time I switch ISPs and the specific info does not seem to be available on any of the ISP sites.
The ideal would be for me to be able to specify the exact end date of the previous contract to the new provider to pick up the service so that it migrates seamlessly without additional charges, but this seems a bit complicated for them to coordinate.
Thanks
Si

I would start the switch 14 days before contract ends .
If switch is early then you only lose a few quid .
AS their is a BT price increase in September you should have received an email phone the number and cancel penalty free or negotiate a new contract .See BT Price increase threads .0
