    Strongly disagree.

Give it long enough and all older vehicles wil be rare. Looked after well enough and kept standard I bet most will eventually be worth more in time.

Not saying every car will be worth a fortune, but if there are not many around and there are buyers with deep pockets specifically after that model then you might get lucky.

Good shout earlier about the E39 540. Even a 530i would be good, not going to get any cheaper from here on.

The 530 was common, but if there were special editions of it, the Champagne Edition I & Champagne Edition II, which are good bets to increase over time.

You would make more money buying modded cars, turning them back to standard and selling for more money and selling the trick bits. Done that to a few cars in the past and made good returns.

Would love to do this, but simple do not have the space to store parts and work on a car at my current home. Although I am looking for a new house, parking facilities is high on my must have list.
Classic car prices do fluctuate, as does the desirability of some models. In 10 or 20 yrs time who knows what the economy will be like and what cars will be sought after.

Agree completely, its all a Risk, but BMW M cars always turn classic and the e39 shape was considered the best of all at the time and even now is loved by a great many people, hence why my consideration of this specific M car.
Buy a car, use it and enjoy it. When you decide to sell, if you have made a profit, good. If not you have had x yrs enjoyment from it.

I do intend on enjoying whatever car I purchase, but as said before, will be more an investment vehicle, driven no more than 2000 miles / annum and used as a summer weekend car.

A quick check on google images will show you lots of modified E30 BMW 325i's M cars have sky rocketed and I do like the shape.

E30 BMWs are awesome, I did have a 318is which I sold 4 years ago for about £1000 (it had a prang on front), a nice condition one of these is now worth an easy £5k plus.

A friend I found out just sold an E30 M3 that was completely track prepared, so no longer road legal - £1000s upon £1000s spent on it and he got I was told £35k for it.

The kicker is that that car started life as a special edition E30 M3 and had he kept the car completely standard and done similar mileage as he did with the track car he would have been able to easily get £60k for it, because all his cars are immaculate.

The only issue with owning 80s-90s classic cars is if you want to sell, peolpe just dont wnt to pay what they are worth now. They still want to pay for what the first part of the decal/badge says.

IE Escort/Fiesta, but they aint just that they need to see it as an RS and not a run of the mill car.
It's worth what somebody will pay for it. If there are no buyers at £X; then it isn't worth £X. It might be what you're willing to pay for a good one but you've already got one...

I think what you might be describing is that there's two possible groups of buyers a) those who are enthusiasts and know all the different combinations and what's a mod worth having and what's just for show or bragging about b) those who wanted one when they were kids and didn't have the money but now do. The first lot might pay the top prices but there are fewer of them around - the second lot won't necessarily.

Not to mention - some of the first group don't want to buy the mint version at full price - they want a bargain they can finish off easily and then enjoy themselves.

    As parking question chap said:

If you're lucky and spot the one that is rare (few left) and desired by lots of people -then you can cash in. Too rare and there will only be a few prepared to pay for that rarity.
I need to think of something new here...

Ford Puma 1.7. Still can be bought for £500-1000 for a perfectly usable one, probably with rusty back arches. Mint ones are around £2K-2.5K, so theres headroom to buy an otherwise good but rusty one and have the bodywork done.

Not sure about the early model ST Fiesta. Not a great car to start with.

ST170 Focus starting to go up a bit in value.

Clio RS172, 182's heading north now for nice ones with history. Trophy variants well ahead.
