A rant abut recruitment process

Hello,

The recruitment process in government/health seriously need looking at and the length of time it takes. I am a regular user but i wish to remain seperate from my other username.

1. Application for job
2. Attend interview
3. Await outcome 1-2 weeks
4. Apply for DBS - anytime up to 3 month (yes i'm aware of update service, but you need an inital DBS first)
5. Await references to come back 1-2 weeks
6. Meet with employer to provide evidence of qualifications/scannig etc. - Anytime
7. Await all to be signed off and varified - Anytime
8. Await a start date.

Anyone ele have experience of witing 2,3,4,5 month to start a job after being offered a role?? It is absurd.

Well it is not uncommon and there is nothing unlawful about it so if it doesn't suit apply elsewhere.

Get a DBS, register on the DBS update website for £13, no more waiting around. Done.

Have you applied for a job in a govt/health as this is the standard.... so it is not me being particular, that's the process... what I am saying is that it needs reviewing, it is a clear fail.

I have friends who apply for jobs in retail, hospitality, editing and they can move jobs quickly and efficiently, waiting months and months on end is a disaster and isn't there some stats around saying people are only 2-3 months jobless are at risk of homelessness?

There are still many employers who want to do their own DBS. For whatever reason they won't accept the update service. I've had 3 done this year despite being on the update.

I am fully aware it is commonplace and you are entitled to your opinion that it needs "reviewing".

Equally, a long winded application process in a large organisation is an easy, if slightly unofficial, of reducing staffing costs. With a predictable turnover of staff, positions may be vacant for on average 5% of the time giving you that saving without redundancies.

Realistically there is nothing you can do about it other than apply elsewhere.

Yes, our board has at times wanted us (HR) to delay either advertising/interviewing or 'onboarding' the new starters until say quarter 2 as that is a saving on the budget line. Not nice for the new employee nor the front line services who are usually on their knees covering the vacancies.

Of course now our board is screaming at us to recruit faster and faster.

My recommendation for anyone applying to public sector is -
    1. get on the update service whenever you can and keep it up to date,
    2. get your referees on board (make sure you have the correct email address!) and ask them to complete asap.
    3. keep in touch with the recruitment people and as much as the delays might frustrate you, be nice and polite and check they have done the things they can - like request references and other clearances. However, DBS is beyond their control and once it is with the Police it takes a long as it takes - I have seen some be completed in 24 hours and others even longer than 24 weeks and there is nothing HR can do about that.

My last employer turned around the DBS clearance in a week.

Sadly the job was not what I expected and I didn't last two months there.
