iPhone 6S Performance - Battery or IOS?

I bought a refurbished iPhone 6S last year. I didn't notice the 'throttling' that was reported all over the media, just that the battery was draining very quickly so I had the battery replaced last year. Not by Apple - it was already third party apparently so they wouldn't touch it.

I am aware that there have been issues with battery drain on IOS 11.4, and 11.4.1. I am on 11.4.1, couldn't tell you exactly when I updated though. I tend to do it more or less as soon as the phone tells me there is one which in hindsight is probably a bad move..

I've done the usual in terms of background app refresh etc to prolong battery life. I'm still seeing the battery drain quickly, but my query is more around the new behaviour (or lack thereof) as the battery drains.

When the phone gets to <60% battery, CPU performance plummets. We're talking unresponsive touch screen, massive lag on apps opening or reacting to menu selections etc. I first noticed this at <30%, then <40%, and so on - i.e. it's gotten worse over the course of a week or two. I can't say exactly when this started, but before it'd perform fine until 1-2% and then turn off.

Would you take it for a new battery (£40, I believe), or hold off until the next IOS is released to see if that resolves the problem?

If you go into Settings Battery and then Battery Health (Beta) what does the Maximum Capacity come back as and what does it say in the next box down?

    There!!!8217;s more information here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208387

I don!!!8217;t know what Apple!!!8217;s stance is over third party repairs but until the end of the year it!!!8217;s £25 to get a new battery for devices affected by chemically aged batteries and performance issues...

Just hold off and wait for the next update.

If your still not satisfied after that then make an appointment with an Apple Store and explain the issue and they will probably recheck battery to ensure it’s holding capacity.
  • My iPhone SE is 2 years and 3 months old. It is a 64GB one running iOS 11.4.1 My battery health shows 81%.

My phone tends to get hammered on web use and is often charged twice a day. I do not have any slowdown issues at all, it is on the original battery.

I would be suspicious of any 3rd party repairs/replacement batteries before blaming Apple for iOS slowdown issues which were addressed in iOS 11.3

What does the battery health show?

Battery health has never worked - can only assume because it's not an Apple battery and Google suggests the same.

I got a third party battery health app, and it suggests my battery wear level is very high and suggests to replace it soon. It's apparently still got a capacity of 70%.

Apple have already flat out refused to change the battery on the basis that it was a third party battery when I took it in (so when I bought it), hence getting a new third party battery put in. I wouldn't mind so much if I could change the battery myself, but I broke my iPhone 5S trying to do that.
