    This is her PSU; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273146947327

The original is rated at 210/220 watts.

If she cannot fit it herself, it will likely be cheaper to just buy a second hand PC.

Thank you everyone for all your help.
It's all a bit over my head so I think I am just going to take it to a repair place.
Hopefully I won't have to buy a new one!

I would think twice about that if I were you. It's a nine year old PC and not a particularly good one.

Even if they charge you £60 to fit a second hand power supply, you can purchase a replacement PC for the same.

I have loads of photos saved (no back up). Will I be able to save these?

Maybe able to access drive but they obviously don't mean a lot to you if you haven't got back ups

Depends if the hard drives are ok.

Do you not know anyone who (a competent person) could look at it for you ?

Should back photos up to a dvd, online storage or another option.

Yes. An easy job that you can do yourself, as long as the hard drive still works.

    Two options;

One is to remove the old HDD and place it into a caddy such as this; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iQon-3-5-SATA-External-USB-Hard-Drive-Desktop-Aluminium-Case-Enclosure-Caddy-/162174483605 making it into an external hard drive

    or

to simply fit the drive into the new PC tower, as a secondary drive.

Both jobs that you can complete easily in minutes with guidance from the forum.

It's not hard drive failure. If it was, you'd hear it start to boot up, and the monitor would display an error message. It's completely dead, so once you replace the PSU (£20 part, ATX power supply, 15 minute job), your data will be fine. Any local PC shop can do this for you (no, not PCW!).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Her data 'will be fine' anyway regardless of the power supply swap. The issue is the cost of the repair and whether it is worth it for a nine year old PC.
Rather than to take the PC anywhere, she can simply call the 'local PC shop' in order to ascertain the cost of fitting a new PSU to that particular machine.
If they refuse to give a price for that particular job and insist that you bring it in, I would give them a wide berth.
In addition, a hard drive back-up and swap seems a likely outcome for a nine year old PC, especially if 'clicking sounds' have been noted along the way.
So one has to weigh the costs.

Plenty of refurbished desktops, these are Dell and are the best, will last you for a long time:

This would be better than throwing money at re[airing an old PC, with the risk of other components failing.

I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
