We have the Gtech K9 Air Ram and K9 handheld. Both excellent hoovers and very impressed. Amazed what it picked up that out Vax For Pets missed!.

it's a vacuum cleaner, not a Hoover. Sir James gets very upset if his products are called Hoovers..
    Oh dear....

Thanks for your replies. I'm being drawn to wards the Dyson V8 as I watched a U tube video, also the Gtech AirRam MK2 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner. Which narrows it done a bit. anyone own these models?

I have Vax blade 32v. Fine for small jobs doesn't have much suction and can easy block, also doesn't hold much in the container and I frequently have to clean the filters to keep suction up. I find it great for stairs and small areas but wouldn't like to use it as main vacuum cleaner

I have the GTECH K9 and the handheld and love them. The handheld is great for the stairs.

I don't find the upright one heavy :)

We've got two cordless vacuum's and rarely use our mains powered one now.
However, as somebody else has mentioned, you need to keep the filters clean to maintain good suction.
I've bought a spare filter for each one so I've always got a clean one available.

Either an Athlet or the V8: forget the Gtech or the Shark, both are cheaply made and won't last. .

I have to disagree with you there regarding the Shark, it's extremely well made, equal if not better than the Dyson, who lets faced it trade entirely on their name. There is nothing on the Shark that is cheap or flimsy.

Bosch were on our shortlist but I found them to be unwieldly and cumbersome.

The Vax/Black & Decker/Russell Hobbs etc really are cheap and nasty.

OP, if you can do try to get to a Curry's or John Lewis so you can push these things around, what look great on screen and what suit some people really can differ to your real-life needs. When we got ours we spent ages pushing them around the store, getting under fixtures and taking them apart to see how easy they were to clean and how easy the handheld parts were to use. I'm glad we did because all of the ones on our shortlist fell short of expectations in one way or another and we ended up buying one we hadn't even considered 'on paper'.

I have a Dyson V8 absolute (2 long haired cats here...) - only negative thing I have to say is why didn't I get it sooner? So far so good, very light/handy. Carpet looks brand new and no dusty bags to replace/deal with.

See if I can test them out, a shark and a Dyson. Not sure if they do the Vtech.

If you do buy a GTech, don't expect to get any manufacturer warranty repair on it unless you buy it direct from the manufacturer, as many have found to their cost. Tesco, AO.com and Euronics outlets no longer stock them because of this absurd policy. If you buy from an obscure 3rd party retailer like Amazon or Argos, you won't be covered.
Dyson cordless models have a 2 year warranty.
