Achieving 40MPG depends on the driver as much as anything.

So since the dawn of cars from early 1900s there's nothing available in the car market right now matching that criteria?

Has everyone been fooled by the previous govts into the diesel cars market having low co2 only to realise now that co2 isnt the problem.

If car manufacturers reading this thread then please take the hint

I have achieved 40mpg in an old 2000/W 2.8 VR6 VW Bora. It was with much coasting on a 20 mile trip averaging about 25 mph, but it's possible. I guess this wouldn't mean the car fit the requirements tho :D

Diesels are now mostly Euro 6 compliant from i think 2016, if you can stretch to the price? MPG varies driver to driver and type of driving and for some cars what "mode" you drive in etc

i have heard 320D cars getting mid 50mpg on average, A4 2.0d ultra getting reasonable MPG also but need to watch as the Ultras can come with 40litre tank but you can get some with larger 54 or 58 litre tanks.

Skoda Superb 1.8TSI - Executive, roomy, available as an automatic, will do about 40mpg, reliable with cheap parts.
The 1.4TSI version would be an alternative with a better MPG and not too much of a drop in BHP.

Or as mentioned an Octavia may well also fit the bill and save a few quid.
