Hp laptop letters wearing off fit for purpose?

Hi,

Hoping someone can help.

My laptop was bought last year (May 2017) and gradually the keyboard letters have begun to wear off. It's a personal laptop not business use and it's becoming difficult to use the keyboard as at least 8 keys are wearing - one has completely disappeared.

I spoke to Currys who say- out of warranty need to pay £65 to look at it and then pay for parts. When I pushed further asking about consumer rights- they said I could get it checked by them STILL £65 and it would only be refunded if it wasn't general wear and tear - which they say it is.

I've had other laptops for years and the letters have never disappeared from the keyboard! How can this be general wear and tear?

Am I covered for them to replace keyboard (this is the part needed according to them) for free as not FIT FOR PURPOSE?

thanks

  • If you want to get a repair under your consumer rights, you need to get proof that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect and if you don't want, or don't trust Currys to do this then you will need to get it done elsewhere.

If this report states a manufacturing defect you can then ask Currys for a resolution which will probably be a repair (but they can also offer a full or partial refund or an exchange) and you can also get them to pay for the report.

TBH this will be down to the oils on your hands (natural ones, not casting aspersions on your cleanliness)

Do you wipe your laptop keys after use (No one does, but this is what HP will say...)

Do you wash your hands before you type (again, I know no one does, but still...)

Do a touch typing course then you will never need to.look at your keys again.

is it not fit for purpose though, i mean you know where A is even with the A missing from the key..
so many variables on this. The keyboard i am using now has no tab, caps lock, A, Alt or O.. its less than a year old but i do a lot of typing.

it doesnt stop me using it and is likely down to a mixture of natural oils, usage and products / lack of cleaning the keyboard.

    unlikely fit for purpose

Yes, the design of the silkscreening should really take account of the likely wear because of the oils naturally occurring on people's skin.

But will your time spent trying to get a resoltion from Currys/HP really be worth less than £1.99?

Mine is the same, also HP but much older.

A new keyboard is only about £12 from eBay...will have to get one soon as half my letters are missing

Its a 5 minute job to fit

Ive lost count of the amount of keyboards I have worn the letters off over the years. As I touch type it makes no odds to me if they are there or not, just makes for good fun if someone tries to use my gear :D

Buy the stickers off ebay and put them on, saves agro and is a cheap way of sorting it out.

Some HP laptop keyboards are way beyond a DIY repair.
