camcorder to computer connection, how?

Hi I have just got the below camcorder.

Someone at work has just told me that I cant connect it to a computer. ( this is one of the reasons that I got it, so I can email family abroad videos of the kids)
It is at home so I cant check at the moment, but he has worried me.
Does anyone own one of these or know if I can connect it. I have tried an internet search but drawn a blank

It has USB so you should be able to connect it.

However - the videos will take up a lot of space on your computer. 7 and a half hours of holiday video took up 80GB on mine. It will download in real time (ie an hour will take an hour to download).

Do not e-mail video to your family - the file sizes would be far too huge for you to upload and for them to download (most broadband providers have limits on upload and download and charge a lot if you go over them). The files would clog up mail servers everywhere. You'd be better off uploading to a website that your family could log onto.

That said, I'm not an expert, so hopefully someone else will be along soon.

Uploading to a web site is beyond me but at least I can put them onto dvd for them.

What do I need to buy to connect it to the computer?

Most Camcorders use a Firewire Connection to computer, not USB.

I cannot see any mention of USB.

A firewire card will be required in the computer if it doesn't have one, if this is the case.

I'm always doing that!!! It is firewire - it's the USB connector on the end that confuses me!

Yes its Firewire the spec says DV out which is what firewire is. OP will need a Firewire interface on their PC, its probably labelled IEEE1394, if not they are cheap to buy.

it didnt have anything in the box called firewire. shall I look on ebay?

HI,

I checked your motherboard manual (page 2-10) and it shows you have a firewire (IEEE1394) port on the back of your PC.

It looks like a mis-shaped USB port. You may need to buy a cable, which shouldn't cost more than £10.

The socket on the left is what should be on your camera, the one on the right should (hopefully) be on the back of your PC.

You'll just need a lead to connect them and some software for editing.

Yes, and as mentioned above, lots of hard drive space!

i have a jvc camcorder but not as good as that one you lucky thing. anyway i am 100% confident you can connect it to your pc. in the instructions it will refer to a dv cable, this is also known as firewire cable. there are two kinds there is a 4 pin to 4 pin and a 4 pin to 6 pin cable. it depends on your pc which you need so refer to your info that you have for your pc regarding firewire cables. it will say which you need, mine needs 4 to 6 pin. the model numbers for the genuine jvc cables are VC-VDV206U and VC-VDV204U. you can get these from jvc direct or from jessops or even most electrical stores. there are other brands of firewire cable but whether it is better to go with one of them rather than the official cable i dont know.

just to add, some camcorders use usb cables to connect to a pc. i dont know whether that applies to any jvc camcorders or not but it will say in the instructions.
