The socket on the left is what should be on your camera, the one on the right should (hopefully) be on the back of your PC.You'll just need a lead to connect them and some software for editing.Yes, and as mentioned above, lots of hard drive space!
the one on the left is 4 pin and the one on the right is 6 pin by the way. the one on the camcorder itself will be 4 pin but on the pc it may be 6 pin. so have a look if you cant find the info.0 -
Just thought I'd add this as It might be useful to other people as well as the OP... I used to work in a camera shop and in the majority of cases, even if the camcorder has a USB port, video cannot be transferred to the PC via it. The USB is usually only for stills. (had this confirmed by Sony and Canon, among others).0

Odd. I took 7.5 hours of video off a Sony camcorder with a USB cable, and it came out fine

With USB 1.1 transferring video wasn't really practical as the data transfer was too slow. USB 2.0 is obviously better but I think Firewire is still generally the favoured option.0 -

that's just what i was told by Sony when i enquired. i guess different models/ranges would affect it.0 -
Same deal with my panasonic.... USB for stills Firewire for video0

Big thanks everyone. So much helpful advice.
I am home now and yes my computer has the photo of the thing on the right, and my cam has the pic of the pne on the left, so now I will pop to my local maplins tomorrow for the firewire cable.
I have only ever had a secondhand camcorder before so I am really excited by this.
Off to Venice next week for a few days so that should give it a good test.
Thanks Again0 -

Don't Know if this will help but..
When I connect my Panasonic Camcorder to my Mac, if the Camcorder setting is set to PC position it wont Recognize it and say error.
However If I set the Camcorder Setting to Playback then click on import on the application i use it works.0
