Moving from DLA to PIP

I had an assessment for PIP on 5th July and received a letter dated 2nd August saying they had all the relevant information to proceed with my claim. Does anyone know how long it will wake for a decision please?

There's no timescales for decisions, it depends on backlog in your area. You can ring PIP and ask for a copy of the assessment report to be sent to you, this will give you some idea what the decision will be as they mostly go with that report. Good luck.
  • Got my award letter today. I've got enhanched care but my mobility has been reduced from high rate to low rate! I can't understand this as I have been on hig rate mobility DLA for the last 12 years and I have got worse mobilty wise not better. So how have they worked that out? It says in the letter that I am able to walk 20 metres with crutches which isn't true and that I can plan and carry out a journey which is partly true, I can plan a journey, but I am not able to do it because I can't go out on my own! My brain is OK, it's my body that doesn't work. I plan to phone them on Monday and ask why they have done this.

If you disagree with the decision you have 28 days to request the mandatory reconsideration (MR) you'll need to put your request in writing stating what you disagree with and where you think you should have scored those points. They will look at the whole award again and not just part of it, so be aware of that.

You say you can plan a journey but aren't able to do it because you can't go out alone? Is this because of your physical disability and you need help when you're out because of it? If so then you won't scored points on the following and planning a journey part. For those with a physical condition they need to concentrate on the moving around part of the mobility.

DLA mobility is 50 metres for high rate but for PIP it's 20 metres. If you can't walk this distance regularly without pain and discomfort then you're classed as not be able to do it. If this is you then this is what you need to concentrate on for the MR request.

Do you have a mobility vehicle? if so then they will be in contact with you to arrange for it to be returned. Depending on how long you've been a customer with motability there maybe a support package available to you.

  • I don't have a motability car. I did have one but sent it back because I couldn't go out on my own, it wasn't getting used, so it was wasting money. I can't walk 20 metres even with my crutches because of pain and getting out of breath and I told the assessor this at the time. I have to use a wheelchair when I go out wth my husband or daughters but I can't use a manual one because my arms aren't strong enough to push myself. Thanks for your help.

If the reason you don't go out alone is because you need someone to push you in your wheelchair then you won't score points in the following and planning a journey part of mobility.

You do risk losing what you already have by asking for the MR but decisions mostly remain the same. Most end up taking it to Tribunal.

  • In the letter it says I can ring them, so I'll do that on Monday. I'll let you know what they say.

Yes, you can but i'd advise you to put your MR request in writing stating what you disagree with and where you think you should have scored those points and why. Ringing them isn't the best thing to do here, they could ignore your request or go ahead with the MR on the evidence you sent, which could mean the decision won't change. Only 20% of MR decisions change and to give yourself the best chance of the decision changing you really should put it in writing. This guide will help you through the process.

Did you also ready the link in my previous post about the mobility descriptors and what they mean? In a previous comment you stated that you can't plan a journey, because you don't go out alone because you need someone to push your wheelchair. This tells me that you don't fully understand what the descriptor means.
  • OK thanks, I'll put a letter together tomorrow when I've read through your link. I understand what you mean about the planning a journey. What I meant was that I can plan a journey but I couldn't carry it out bcause I can't go out on my own, but they wouldn't take that into account would they? Would I send my letter to the address on the letter I have received or is there another address for an MR?

Planning a journey is about mental health/learning disability. If your reasons for not being able to plan a journey are physical, then they won't take that into account.

By plan a journey they mean work out a route etc.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

No they would not. The first question is aimed at establishing mental state, the second question deals with physical restrictions.

To the address on the letter.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
