Trying Opera, have you any comments?

I've used chrome for years, recently thought I'd install Firefox simply to see how it presented itself on my HP W10 laptop. As yet haven't noticed anything worth making it my daily choice of browser.

But quite out of the blue, thought I would try Opera, a browser first tried many years ago. Unsure if it's my imagination, but it seems to work as fast and is clearer.

Is anyone in a position to define how Opera is better than those I've mentioned?. As it stands, I could easily use it as my main browser.

  • The new version of Opera is based on Chromium.

The older versions of Opera (up to 12.18) were based on their Presto engine and was way way way faster than anything based on Chromium.

With Opera 12.18 I routinely open 10-20 tabs in one go from the bookmarks menu on Ebay and a variety of forums and they all load pretty much instantly. This is on a 10 year old laptop running Vista. Being able to toggle image downloading between none/cached/all and switch between author and user CSS modes easily are winners. They're missing from Opera-Chromium.

(I do have both versions running on the same computer.)

Take your Opera glasses, make sure your hearing aids have fresh batteries, dress up, don't sing along, it's not like the Proms, and take your own popcorn.

I started using Opera (again) when Firefox was having some problems. I've never gone back.
It does everything I want, you can load chrome extensions if you wish, so there isn't much you can't add to it.
Yes, I find it fast with some useful features and I quite like the sidebar.
I'd recommend anyone to at least give it a go.

Rumrat, Two things thanks. I took a dislike to the sidebar so removed it, with that out of the way, I am enjoying it thus far.

Owain, is there anyway I could get this:-

The older versions of Opera (up to 12.18) were based on their Presto engine

as you say it was much faster, perhaps a link please?.

Choose whether you want the International or English version then choose the version for your OS (32 or 64 bit). Be sure to turn off autoupdate to stop it trying to update.

I'm glad t's not just me, I'm a long-term user of Opera 12.17 & 12.18 and always have it on all my machines (along with other browsers as well).

OP, you may also like to try Yandex. Again it's based on chromium but better than Chrome (which I hate with a passion ;) )

Yes, that worked thanks, but oddly enough, font was sort of fuzzy, tried a couple of sites, then discovered a webcam page wouldn't load, said something about html not being recognised. So will stay with the opera I have, even though it is chromium inspired. thanks again

Having tried most of the “well-known” browsers, and some of the more obscure, Opera would be my browser of choice. It feels quick, slick and modern.

However, a warning for those using Sandboxie. Opera won’t video-stream when browsing sandboxed. This seems to be a problem with Sandboxie rather than Opera, so a no-no for me until they find a fix.

I like Vivaldi, created by one of the original guys behind Opera. It's another newish Chromium-based browser.
