Bathroom / Toilet Quotes

I have received a quote from a builder for the following. Seems excessive to me. Is he saying he does not want to do the job or am I missing something?

* Disconnect existing sanitaryware, strip out and cart away
* Hack off wall tiles and make good plaster
* Strip wallpaper and make good (in toilet)
* Install new bath, basin, WC and radiator and connect to existing hot and cold supplies and waste pipes
* Fit new skirtings to WC area

Note: Sanitaryware is not included. Also no tiling is included. He is just going to plaster the walls.

My bathroom and toilet are of average size in a 3-bedroom semi 1930s house

Cost £3000 + VAT

  • Good morning: :eek:Your quote is well over the top...more quotes are in order. If you don't know any other plumbers you can find one at www.iphe.org.uk

Thanks for the swift reply. I also received another quote below. As before I have used the wording the builders came back with.

    * To remove tiles and bathroom suite & toilet and fit new suite (£760)
    * Strip paper and make good walls and ceiling by skimming (£550)
    * Fit new radiator (£60)

Is this more reasonable or should I continue to get more quotes?

Hi..does the second quote include removal of waste materials? In that case, it would be a decent price down here according to OH (plumbing and heating engineer in East Kent). Who will be tiling? If the plumber isn't then this could be a stumbling block as could affect timelines....see if you can get an all inclusive quote...don't forget an extractor/lighting unless both are already in place.

Ah good point. This is part of a bigger repairs and improvements quote around the house so the skip cost was £180. Tiling is not included as we have somebody to do this already.
So the total for the bathroom is £940 (bathroom suite) plus approx £600 for plastering/skim coat to walls and ceiling
  • Hi there, we are in the process of having our bathroom done, our plumber is charging us £800 this is for the following:

    Remove old bathroom suite
Fit new Bath, Toilet, Basin, Heated towel rail and mixer shower (with pump)

We have supplied everything except the pump and we are doing the tiling ourselves, we have had the whole bathroom re-plastered (cost £250) as it had pine tongue and groove round the bottom section and when we ripped it off it was back to brick and wood slats, our house was built in 1913 and the size of the bathroom is 8 feet by 6.5 feet

Forgot to say we had the bath turned round and moved 2 feet to the other wall

    Hope that helps:D

Did the £800 include the plumber supplying a pump?
Our plumber has quoted £250-400 for a pump and has also advised a new hot water storage tank(ours is 15y old) for £500. Not sure what final quote is yet, but that was £900 we weren't expecting!

What do people think of power shower vs electric shower? We had planned to get an ensuite built in a bedroom with a 2nd shower which would be electric and have our bathroom with a mixer shower coming off hot tank. He has told us that running costs are very high for electric showers so recommended getting a pump and new tank.

    What do u think?
  • Yes the pump is £250, he was originally going to put us a new larger, plastic cold water tank in the loft, we currently have a smallish aluminium one in the airing cupboard in our room, this was in order to increase the water pressure on our gravity fed hot water system, we decided to go for a mixer shower instead of an electric one for the cost, both of running it and paying for an electrician to fit it. It has worked out roughly the same cost to have a pump fitted and leave the tank where it is.

    Hope that helps?

PS our tiling is coming along really well - OH is doing it and making a grand job!! Will post some pics soon

    I need a stiff drink!
How about this for a quote:
    1. We remove our bathroom suite, tiles and tongue and groove ceiling for free. We supply all goods.
Plumber installs quad shower (moving pipes from a stud wall to solid wall just beside), freestanding bath, sink and toilet (all in same positions as previously so no extra plumbing) and a towel rail radiator ( involving moving pipes from coming vertically from floor to out of stud wall, but same wall position). Plumber plasters walls/ceiling but no tiles or tiling. Room 2.5x2.3m. Extractor fan supply/fit.
    Quote £2800!!!

    2. New ensuite with all new plumbing for toilet, sink and shower in bedroom(beside bathroom) and stud wall/door/skirting/plastering. Extractor fan supply/fit. We supply all white goods.
    Quote £3400!!

How come only £600 difference for doing completely new plumbing and making a new room? Don't get me wrong - I think both are a rip-off, but the refit of the bathroom price is a joke.

Have another quote for the same job on the way- it better be better!!!!

Hate to sicken you but....................... (bare in mind I'm in Dundee)

I've been quoted £450 to have my bath toilet and sink replaced (staying in the same place) and a new shower fitted (this is being moved from an end of the bath to the middle).

Also included in the quote is getting my bathroom tiled all round the bath wall, the sink wall and half way up the other walls. I will be supplying the tiles and adhesive, but not chosen the tiles yet as I can't find any I'm really daft on and don't want to make do. I'll remove the old tiles (think it will be quite therapeutic).

Lastly, yip there is more, he is going to fit a new towel radiator thingymajig, oh and box in any pipes and tile that too.

Not sure if he is going to dump the old bathroom suite, but if not the local council will collect it for around £5 so I'm not too worried there.

When you get quotes like £3800 to refit a standard suite the builder/plumbler is trying to tell you somthing. I got a £3800 quote a few days ago from another builder. It makes the other quote I had of £760 look very good. Basically they do not want the job. Period. I phoned my builder and asked him if there was any flexibility and he said no so I said thank you very much and move on.

Get a few quotes. Anything into 4 figures without tiling is unrreasonable
