What is most efficient way to run central heating?

We have an Ideal Classic boiler (approx. 8 years old now) in a 4 bed house. We tend to run the heating on constant, using the thermostat to turn up/down as required. Tends to be on about 18-20 during day, down to 16 over night.
I am at home all day (well in/out), as 7 months pregnant. 2 kids home after school.
My question is - is this the most efficient way to run the central heating system? or would we be better off using the timer and boost button if needed.

Thanks for the advice.

  • Good morning: Many will disagree but for me it all comes down to personal comfort rather than money saving. I'm normally working at home for most of the day with the room stat at 18-19 C ...we turn down the stat at night to 16C as we sleep better with a chill in the air and a comfy duvet...of course I've spent most of my life in a country with much harsher winters where the heating is always on or the pipes freeze/ice forms on windows etc...I'd rather be comfortable in my home then save a few quid in this instance.

    Hi Mumto2,

You should get more help with this on the fuel and other heating board so I'll move your thread across for you.
