o2 data charges in Egypt

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help, my partner and I just got back from Egypt and she received her phone bill, o2 are charging £35.00 for 5mb worth of data whilst abroad!

We've worked out in the car to the hotel she received a text saying welcome to o2 abroad, so she then turned off her mobile data and used wi-fi or tethered to my data (completely separate Vodafone contract).

My question is, can she appeal this or will a complaint work? £35.00 for 5mb of data is absurd in my experience, I don't see how they can justify it? Any tips for dealing with it from anyone who's experienced the same thing would be much appreciated.

Her phone probably started to use data as soon as it connected to the network in Egypt. The charges are £7.20 a MB and she used 5MB so O2 have charged correctly. She can always try and get this waived/reduced on a goodwill basis but O2 have every right to charge this.

I would always suggest turning off Mobile Data and/or Data Roaming before leaving the UK to avoid charges like this if you do not already have a plan in place to reduce roaming charges.

There isn't really a reason for networks to justify pricing in a competitive market as long as prices are readily available in advance. You're free to choose whether or not to use the service.

As mentioned before, an appeal to their goodwill might work

The network she connected to in Egypt could well charge O2 most of that, a lot of the overseas networks look at roams as cash cows.
