cheap 3g phone / help understanding phones

I need to replace my old phone, it's a spare I use for comping so don't want to spend much, it's a brick on 2g. I need a 3g phone. Well so my sim provider says. (bad to non-exixtent signal on 2g??) I'm with 1p mobile, and they say I have a 3g sim, though it worked fine with my phone for 6 months, but not now.

Now this is all a bit of a mystery to me. I found 3g cheap phones but they seemed to be tied to contracts. Is it even possible to get a 3g phone that's not a smartphone? Do I look for sim-free or unlocked or what? Sorry I just don't understand all this, any help gratefully received.

Price check SIM Free phones at Argos (SIM Free means unlocked at their site). Use the "Network Capability" filter and select all the ones that say 3G.

They have one for £29.95 and then the rest are from £49.95 upwards
