Ryanair strike: right to rerouting?

Many people have had their journeys disrupted this morning.

Is there a right to rerouting on flights operated by other airlines?

And if Ryanair fail/refuse to make a booking on a non-Ryanair flight, does the affected passenger have the right to buy a new ticket and make Ryanair pay for it?

    The reg 261:2004 says

    "Article 8

    Right to reimbursement or re-routing

    1. Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered the choice between:

    (a)...

    (b) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity; or

    (c) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at a later date at the passenger's convenience, subject to availability of seats."

No where does it say 're-routing by operating air carrier with whom the passenger booked with'.

lewroll argued with Jet2 on this https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3070460/jet2-com-leaving-me-in-the-lurch
and they paid up in the end.

No airline wants this point to get in front of a Judge, they can't risk losing.

And to add, Ryanair explicitly state they will reroute on other carriers on their own website.

They are ignoring 'at the earliest' opportunity and picking and choosing certain airlines.

Thank you for the comments, which confirm my own understanding.

BBC Radio 4 this morning interviewed a woman who need to travel to Sweden for a wedding on Saturday but has now been stranded. Ryanair could not offer transport until after the wedding (although she had said she was willing to leave from any airport in the UK), and she said sadly that while flights were available with other airlines, they cost around the 400 pound mark and so were not an option for her. No mention of any rights under the Directive...

Sure, my point was just that Ryanair explicitly agrees that the right to rerouting isn't limited to their own planes. Whether what they offer on their website is in full compliance with EU261 is another issue.
