Water Source Heat Pumps

Hi

Has anyone had experience of a water source heat pump. We are seriously considering this and our initial enquiries look positive but I was just wondering if anyone either had one of has installed one?

Are you talking of a ground loop system, borehole or river lake to supply the heating system?
There is lots of info on the ground source heat pump sticky that may help.

thanks I did read the information and the thread on ground source heat pumps but it didn't specifically seem to address the issues and questions I have about a water source heat pump.

Our idea is using the bywash area of the canal adjacent to our garden for either a open or closed loop system. We have contacted a number of companies and I'm just wondering if anyone has specific feedback from a similar system (niche area I know)!

I know with open loop you'll need an abstraction licence if over 20,000 litres a day but I'm not sure we will exceed this and it looks like a small open loop system doesn't need a discharge permit either though I'm waiting for the EA to confirm. Closed loop I understand no permit or abstraction is needed but it maybe less efficient.

We are also in conversation with the Canal & River Trust but it's all early stages so I'm just doing lots of research.

A closed loop system should not be too much of a problem, as it is sealed.
open loop could be far more regulated, as you are pumping back into the source. I do not know the UK regulations on that, but they are usually quite strict as with boreholes.
