takman, I had an external hard drive on my LG tv and it was pretty poor. The single tuner was a pain, and it could never record HD channels properly. On a PVR, it is so much better and easier. The HD is now on my PS4 instead, and I can record 2 channels on the PVR and watch a third through the TV signal.

It doesn't have dual tuners but that's the only advantage a PVR will usually have...

This question (about ditching Sky or VM and still having recording functions) comes up a lot. So, it's worth clarifying that when comparing a TV-based recording system with one tuner, and a separate PVR, there will always be at least 2 tuners available with the PVR system - the one in the TV and the one or more in the PVR.

There may be some people whose recording habits are such that they only want to record the channel selected on the TV (perhaps they record whilst they are watching streaming content or Bluray?) But I think that most people will want to the capability to record one TV program whilst watching another and that inevitably means two tuners.

When cancelling Sky, almost a year ago (and still not missing it) I got out the old Humax box intending to use it for recording.

However, I haven't found any need for it, as using an Amazon tv Fire stick, which has all the channel1-5 catchups (our Panasonic tv lost ITVHub and All 4 )means I miss very little . The 'stick' also has catchup apps for other channels too, besides access to Youtube, Spotify and other providers like Netflix, Amazon for a fee.

teddysmum I'm looking at a Humax box too - though the amount of stuff we have on the sky planner unwatched makes me question just how much we'll need one.
