O2 top up frustration

I have just got the pay as you go o2 sim card. Rang the 4444 number to top up with debit card. Got to payment stage and unsuccessful. Card ok, bank in credit etc. Tried credit card and the same happened. Phoned the 4445 number to actually speak to someone and it automatically flips me back to the menu for topping up as I have zero credit. Round and round in circles and cannot top up with 2 valid cards with no reason given.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how do you speak to someone ?
