Virgin Media

After reading comment on MSE about loss of UKTV channels on Virgin Media I
contacted VirginMedia, could not get through first time hung up after 15 mins waiting, second time got through after 10-minute wait! Lady I spoke with said if matter was not resolved by 18 August then customers would be able to exit contracts penalty free! She really was not interested in discussing anything else. The way Virgin has handled this matter is appalling, made worse because they think they are the masters at PR, which they are not. I have been with Virgin and predecessors for 20+ years and I am now looking at alternatives. As service is via Virgin's fibre optic cable, how can other company's offer fibre optic service if they do not own the existing cable?

They do what Virgin and its predecessors did. Spend money on infrastructure, ie instal their own fibre-optic cable.

Virgin don't use fibre - their service is delivered over coax.

Well yes to your house - generally (unless you are on their FTTP network - new build areas). But the main Virgin network is fibre based to the street cabinets.

You will need a traditional "BT" line for most alternative broadband and phone products. BT are required to offer wholesale access to their network so any ISP or teleco can offer a service. No-one else can offer a service over your VM connection.
