Why did you not use your new on the original quotes?
I've had a comparison account for ages, which I only look at once a year or when I suddenly what a dream car out of no where! I literally only realised I still had my old name on it when I came to purchase the policy and realised, otherwise I'd have never known. My only guess would be if you had a more common new surname that pops on their computers as having had lots of claims then they might weight the policy against you by a small amount (like £20) because people called Jones statistically have more accidents than people called Henderson or whatever.
The nonsense that goes on in the background where they assess 'risk' can be based on many things and I wouldn't mind betting a name is one of them!
Glad they corrected this when you spoke to them though and thanks for updating us.
I've been reading up on that, it's actually ridiculous from some of the stuff I've read. What you say makes sense though as my old surname is a very unique one and my new one is not as unique!0
