Insurance and Name Change, changes quotes?

Hello,

I recently changed my surname to that of my dads with a self made deed-poll have had my drivers licence changed (This was September/October last year) and have been using that surname since. I read up that I didn't have to change my surname on the insurance as longs I'm not trying to have 2 identities e.g. I'm the same person. Anyway it's car insurance renewal time and I figured I might as well change the name at this point. I originally got quotes (Today) under 1 name on the comparison website, picked an insurer went through to their website and changed the name. The quote changed on the name change. I then went back to the comparison site and all quotes have gone up with the change of name... So my question is can I just keep my old surname and save myself £20? I don't know of any reason why I can't? Only issue I do see is if anything came about I'd just need to produce a few extra documents to show I am who I say I am?

edit: I've literally gone backwards and forwards with the name change on the comparison website a number of times.. here are the prices;

Old name: £566.22
New name: £581.61

Any help is much appreciated,

Cheers,

Martin.

You need to change your name on all legal documents - not worth trying to save £20 by having incorrect insurance documents and them refusing a claim in the future.

Do you have a source to back that up?
  • Thanks for the responses,

But why would they refuse a claim if I'm the same person? It might be £20 now but if I suddenly start looking at this over a 10 year period that's £200 if that continues? I was under the impression that only the Driving licence needs to change if you have changed your name? Everything else can stay status quo, including your passport? While I'm known under my new name technically isn't my old surname just an alias? This is the bit I really don't get and there's no guidance I can find at all.

I think I might try contact the company directly and just say I have 1 quote under my old name, 1 under the new can I have the same price as my old name and go from there. If they say no I'll look into this a bit more as I have 5 days before it runs out.. Still seems really odd, I've been digging around the internet for 2 hours and it seems that some insurers literally insure by name which seems absolutely bonkers to me.

Common sense really, and guidance :

Have you got any source that says you shouldnt tell your insurers that you have changed your name?

You say it like its fact.

You can call yourself anything you want to as long as it's not for dishonest reasons.

There is no obligation to, you can call yourself whatever you like.
  • So, I've rang the insurance company up and they said it doesn't matter what surname I use so I'll take that. I even started with the original and changed it and she said it doesn't matter in the slightest.

Thanks for your help and discussions on the topic much appreciated! Maybe should have rang them first but in the end at least it's a positive outcome and maybe help others if they come across the post.

My only guess would be if you had a more common new surname that pops on their computers as having had lots of claims then they might weight the policy against you by a small amount (like £20) because people called Jones statistically have more accidents than people called Henderson or whatever.

The nonsense that goes on in the background where they assess 'risk' can be based on many things and I wouldn't mind betting a name is one of them!

Glad they corrected this when you spoke to them though and thanks for updating us.

Why did you not use your new on the original quotes?
