Laminate in a conservatory?

Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with laminate flooring in a conservatory. The conservatory is being delivered tomorrow so it won't be long before I have to make my choice. I know tiles would be the best option but there are some lovely laminates around now. I was most worried about fading. The only other option could be tiles that have a woodfloor effect! Any views/opinions would be most welcome.

Laminate in a conservatory is fine, most laminates these days are of fairly decent quality and can withstand a lot daylight, also it depends on what type of roof your conservatory will have, ie. glass or polycarbonate. If it's polycarbonate then it should be opal as opposed to clear as this will take away the glare of the sun, if it is glass then it should be anti sun, blue tint or equivalent.
All in all thousands of of conservatories are installed each year and probably half of them have laminate floor fitted ( most of the time this is a so called freebie ) but we all know that's just a gimmick, however if your still unsure then just ask the floor supplier for advice as I'm sur they'll be happy to help.
  • Hi. Its a polycarbonate/opal roof. Its all DIY I'm afraid or rather us and Dad. My dad and hubby are fitting the conservatory (done one before, so cross fingers all goes well) and then its my job for the floor. I've laminated the lounge and have tiled the kitchen and bathroom. We have a local firm who sells major brands of laminate and are very good on prices. They have some lovely stuff so I'm very tempted. That said I'm in Stoke so there are plenty of tile warehouses! Thanks for the reply as like you say I bet most conservatories have laminate.

We laid our own laminate in our conservatory in our old house. Was brilliant. My uncle had a firm come in and do his. I have to say...ours looked much better because we took more care and time. We didn't like beading, so we asked the conservatory company to leave us with skirting so we could put on ourselves after we put the laminate down. Looked much neater. It will look great. Good luck!

A good way of finishing laminate in a white pvc conservatory is to use the white quadrant beading around the edge (Assuming it is a full length conservatory and not a walled one).
Cannot remember if the one we purchases was designed for flooring or sealing around a bath but look at both as one is a lot cheaper than the other (I know we used one for the "wrong" application but I cannot remember whether it was the flooring bead in the bathroom or the bathroom beading for the conservatory flooring !!)

If your floor is concrete, make sure it's really dry (several weeks) before you put down the laminate - otherwise it will warp - that's what we were told and ours is great
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!
  • Iv'e got Laminate tile style flooring in my Conservatory, it's been great, roof is slightly tinted and have had no problems at all, mine is on top of a board floor and has got the foam underlay underneath, all the best with your Conservatory you'll love it.

I know the feeling. most popular reason for unused conservatory is "too cold" that's why people only get about 6-7 months use throughout the whole year.

Best off getting underfloor heating if you can afford it, if not then go for a wall mounted panel heater (if having a dwarf wall) or a freestanding one for no wall.
  • Hi were planning at getting a conservatory in the next few months approx 4mx4m, not sure to go for a glass roof (£1000 more is it worth it?). Is it worth getting underfloor heating does it make a big difference? We were going to get a big radiator put in anyway, it also gets quite a lot of sun from 11am till 8pm in summer.

Ours hasn't faded after 7 years. Remember the temperature swings a lot in a consevatory, so make sure adequate expansion room is left around the edges. If there is an exterior door make sure you use a waterproof adhesive on at least the joints in that area, to make sure the joints don't swell and delaminate from wet feet entering.
