Sold a car

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone could help me.
I sold my car a month ago on eBay. The buyer paid in cash. I issued a "sold as seen' receipt which we both signed.
The buyer has just messaged me demanding a refund, claiming that I have sold him an unroadworthy car and that there is £1000 worth of work to be done and that If I don't give him a refund and take the car back, that he will be going to trading standards.

Prior to selling the car, i had been driving it and was unaware of any problems with it.

Where do I stand?

Caveat Emptor. People seem to try this scam on a regular basis. Buy a car, drive it for a month then demand a refund. Bingo a months free motoring.

    Block their number.
  • So I'm not likely to have trading standards banging down my door?

What if he comes banging on my door? I have a 5 month baby at home and I'm terrified that's what he's going to do.

Politely ask them to leave your premises or you will contact the police.

Did it have an MOT and are you a car dealer?
  • Thank you.

I completely understand his frustration/anger. I wouldn't have sold the car if there had been any problems with it. I'm too soft and wouldn't want anyone to buy a broken car especially since we've experienced it.

My husband brought a car 6 years ago, drove it home 30 miles and 4 days later, the head gasket blew. He brought the car as his previous cars head gasket blew.
That required a loan to buy and then had to extend that loan to get another car.

Hopefully, he will get the information he requires.
I replied to his first message- Hi. The car was sold as seen. I'm sorry if there is work to be done, but you have had the car a month now. We can't say where the £1000 worth of work has come from. I understand your frustration but there is nothing I can do.
  • It has mot until nov/dec and no I'm not a car dealer. First time I've ever sold a car.
If I never have to sell a car again,I will be asking my father to sell it on my behalf.

What did they say the problems were?

As above block the number and don't have anymore contact with them.
  • No they didn't say what the problems were. Just that there were £1000 worth of work and that it was unsafe to drive.

I don't intend to have any more contact.
Won't blocking them just make me look like I'm guilty?
He brought the car from my home,so I'm concerned he will just turn up.

Its a scam. Cease all contact with them. You have nothing to fear, you sold a second hand car, the buyer turned up, inspected it and agreed to buy. That's it. Trading standards cant get involved as you aren't a trader, at the very most they could start small claims court case against you- but you'd win, its all hot air- don't worry.

As a none expert you sold a car in faith. It had passed an MOT and was inspected by the purchaser.

He won't turn up. He's a scam artist and he knows it. He also won't report you. He won't want the attention.
