So you are using 3264 units a year for day and 2300 for night.

Very roughly this is approx £750 a year / £60 a month. And at 41% E7 is marginally better than a single rate tariff.

So is your £125 a big catch up bill due to underpayment ?

Need some advice on energy prices guys.

I live in a one bed flat with no hot water and one storage heater that is only ever on the lowest setting (I have electricity only). I am with E.on (and previously EDF), and my bills are insane. E.on are trying to charge me £125 a month (which they state is over the national average), but I have no idea why it is so high

I have friends and family that live in multi-roomed houses with children on gadgets 24/7, heating, lights constantly on, who pay nowhere near what I am being charged.

I have changed suppliers from EDF to E.on but the price seems to have increased! Any ideas what could be causing such huge bills and how to fix it?

This was an issue we discovered ourselves and brought up with the supplier. They said they were going to get in touch with their transposing team, and when I contacted them after some time to set my DD up again £125 is what they quoted as my new DD (it was £59 when I first switched but from my given meter readings this was too low apparently and they tried to up my DD to nearly £200 a month, which is why I brought up the transposed issue with them - not for the first time).

We have however checked the serial number and they match those on our bill.

We have a transposed meter so R2 is actually our day reading. The economy 7 switches on around midnight and turns off around 7am.

We boil the kettle to wash up, and yes we have an electric shower.

Hello LouFace and already some great advice on here. Thanks all.

You mention the readings being transposed. Are we now billing your night usage at the lower rate and the day usage at the higher rate? Was there a period where this wasn't being done including with the previous supplier?

If we had been billing too much on the lower rate, I suspect we had undercharged you. Don't worry, in these cases, we don't backdate charges. You will, though, have seen a rise in your bills going forward. This will be reflected in your monthly payments. Also, if the transposed issue had been there whilst you were with the previous supplier, it'll have given a false impression of how much the electricity was costing. As a result, it's likely your opening payments were lower than they should've been. Once it had been put right, we'll have reviewed the monthly payments based on the corrected prices.

Was there an outstanding balance on the account when the Monthly Direct Debit was reviewed. If there was, this will have been included in the ongoing arrangement and spread up to the next review.

Our Monthly Direct Debits are based on current prices and past usage. A change to either will lead to a change in the monthly payments. The aim is to achieve as near as possible to a zero balance by the annual review.

What tariff are you on? There's a range of tariffs available both with us and with the other suppliers. Pop your details on to the independent Price Comparison sites for a wider picture of what's available.

Going forward, you can use an online tool to check payments are covering the ongoing usage and keeping the account on track for a zero balance by the annual review. Provided you've registered with our website, the Direct Debit Manager shows how things are going and lets you make changes to the monthly amounts to better suit different circumstances.

Sorry for all the questions LouFace.

£125 is the DD amount E-on have said I have to pay each month based on the previous 12 months usage.

In the absence of any ACTUAL meter readings either by a meter reader or by yourself they are guessing.

Go online to your Eon account and give the readings you have just taken. That should generate a new bill from Eon.

The readings are now being billed correctly, there was a time when it was billed incorrectly by the previous supplier (but I did not discover this until after we left and signed up with E-on) and a few months by E-on before it was discovered.

We discovered the transposed issue because our bills we’re too high and we were trying to figure out why. It wasn’t a case that the bills were low and now they are high, they have always been higher than we think they should given what we use.

There is no outstanding balance included in the £125 DD, that is simply the monthly DD quoted for electricity usage going forward.

We are on Economy 7 which is the only tariff we can have as we have storage heaters.

Do come back to the forum once you have submitted your readings as per my post and you've got a new statement.

E7 is probably the best tariff.

Hello LouFace and thank you for the additional information.

Glad we're billing the readings correctly now. I'd suggest using the online tools I mentioned previously to make sure the payments are keeping you on track for a zero balance by the annual review.

Many thanks for giving us monthly meter readings. This is the best way to keep billing accurate and will let you use the online Direct Debit Manager to change the monthly payments if these are too high or too low. Provided accounts are billed up to the latest readings, payments can be changed by up to 20 per cent up or down. By up to 5 per cent up or down without readings. At the annual review, any credit balance over a fiver is automatically refunded to your bank.

There are a lot of tariffs available with Economy 7 options both with us and with the other suppliers. Check these out to make sure you're on the best deal for you. Use kWh rather than monetary values for a better comparison of what's on offer. If you take readings now and from a year ago, the difference will give you an annual usage figure that can be entered on the Price Comparison sites. We'll have used a similar method when working out your monthly payments.

When you've a minute, have a look at the energy saving pages on our website. There's some good stuff there to help save money by saving energy.

Sorry for the late reply LouFace. My first day posting on MSE this week.
