In UK can I change US$ direct to Euros without first changing to £?

I have about $400 left from a previous holiday, and need to buy Euro's for a forthcoming trip, but my local Currency Exchange (that's the name of the company) insists I change the $ to £ first, then the £ to Euros, so I take a double hit on their conversion rates (they don't charge fee, it's just "hidden" in their rates).

First day of my new trip is in Switzerland, so going to need a bit of Swiss currency as well, but not a lot, so may just take some £'s and change there.

You cannot. Take your dollars to Switzerland and euro land to change them. In future use fee free plastic to avoid the expense and hassle of exchanging cash and being stuck with leftovers:
