HDMI lead from laptop

I have a HP Pavilion laptop that I have connected to my Samsung SyncMaster 2494 HM monitor and even though I have adjusted the resolution to fit the monitor the picture is not as sharp and clear as what is on the laptop monitor.

I used the HDMI lead to see what I got with my desktop and I get the same poor picture compared to using a DVI lead.

I tried a different HDMI lead and got the same result on both my desktop and laptop.

I have got the latest drivers on both my desktop and laptop though the laptop shows generic monitor whereas the desktop shows Samsung drivers in device manager.

Windows 10 on both my desktop and laptop.

It may be to do with the different 'native resolution' of the laptop screen and the Syncmaster screen, and possibly a different ratio between the horizontal and vertical number of pixels of the laptop screen as against the Syncmaster.

It's usual to adjust the Display Settings on Windows 10 on the laptop to give the best resolution on the bigger screen, so I'm not clear why you want also to optimise the picture on the laptop screen?

Can you say what are the native resolutions of both screens, please?

Later... Google tells me that the native resolution of the Syncmaster is 1920 x 1080

Because you are using a HDMI lead the computer/monitor may turn overscan on. This is when the edges of the picture are not displayed and the rest of the image is zoomed in slightly to fill the screen. This was necessary in the CRT TV days and is not now and just makes things slightly fuzzy.

Go into the relevant settings to check.

I don't want to optimise the laptop screen it is the monitor I want to look better.

Go into the relevant settings to check.

Relevant settings do not fix it.
There is no option to change anything

Do you have the laptop open? If so and the laptop is set to mirror the displays then chance are you'll be seeing the laptop's native resolution which may be a poor choice for the monitor.

Do things get better if you close the laptop lid or use Windows + P to extend the display?

The problem here is that TV screens are not designed to be used as monitors in the same way as laptop screen is, they tend to blur all the text.

Because of the way they work you may need to faff around with the settings on the TV to get an acceptable picture.

Are you extending your desktop or mirroring it?

All very well but the device the OP is using is a computer monitor and not a TV.

what model of HP Pavilion laptop do you have? What screen resolution does it support. a 1280x900 will not show up as well as native mode 1920 x 1080

Dont know if it would fix it, but would be thinking along the lines of one of these if my laptop is 1280x900 but search for a usb 3 one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-To-VGA-DVI-HDMI-Multi-Display-Monitor-Graphic-Adapter-Converter-1920x1080/263371103955?hash=item3d52241ed3:g:wOoAAOSwYc5aKIW7
