Hi

I lost my phone which had a contract sim card on the three network.

I am 7 months into my contract.

What will happen now when i report it to three? will they charge me for a replacement sim card? do i have the option to cancel he contract (probably not, I think).

Do you any insurance for the phone, either from the provider or house contents etc?

They will replace the SIM; most networks will make a nominal charge for this of maybe £20 to £30. Replacing the phone will be more tricky if it's not insured. Perhaps the best thing would be to get a new payg phone on 3 and put this new SIM in it.

You won't be able to cancel the contract. If it's one of those ones with cashback that reduces the rent to almost nothing I suppose you might consider just not using it and getting another contract, but this somehow feels wasteful to me even if paradoxically it might actually be the cheapest!

If you don't have any sort of insurance, you will need to keep on paying monthly line rental. The network will give you a replacement SIM card - they will usually charge you for this: unlike when you are at the end of your contract, you don't have much leverage with them since you can't cancel yet. You will only be able to cancel your contract if you pay them the full cost of line rental for the rest of the term as a lump sum now, and then you'd lose all the benefit of the free minutes, etc.

I would suggest that you contact them as soon as possible, though, since, if someone else is using your phone you will be liable for any call charges until you report it as lost.

Remember that if you have household insurance the phone might well be covered by that, though of course remember that this depends on the policy and you will probably have to pay an excess.

    Replacement SIM costs £15.
Before you report to 3 and block your old SIM, make any account changes required(like reducing the price plan etc). Because after blocking your old SIM, you won't be able to make any changes until you activate your replacement SIM.

Handset replacement is possible only if your under insurance.

My daughter had hers stolen in a nightclub so next day when she admitted it she rang and blocked it. I thought we might have had something in the post from them but not so and no sign of last months bill yet. No idea yet wether anyone tried to use it in the 12 hours between.

The funny thing is that she has had to replace the phone three times because of faults and this phone was not working properly either when it was pinched. So whoever pinched it would have found he could get calls in but couldnt hear anyone if he rang out.

So she still has three months line rental to go on her contract which she will still have to pay.

She is now using a PAYG phone. She used to use up to 600 texts a month and her bills often topped £100. Last month she only put £10 credit on her phone, too skint to top it up but o2 also gave her £2.50. Mind you the home phone bill is larger so I have to remember to put the lock on and she also borrowed a lot of other peoples phones to text and got people to ring her by pranking them.

    The joys of being 17.
