So your phone line is physically connected to your neighbours/landlords line?.

You should plug a phone into it and when it rings pick up the phone and say "sorry to intrude on your conversation but i need to talk to you about getting my own phone line". I bet they would soon let someone in to sort it out then!
Or the neighbour could swiftly rectify the issue with a pair of scissors...

Virgin will do an internet only connection, but you would need consent from your landlord to put it in

You could plug in a phone and have free calls by the sound of it.

But the OP needs internet access. They cannot arrange that on a line already in use and in someone elses name.

Presumably the line already receives the necessary signals, plugging a router in may work.

Well first you would need to find out what internet supplier they use so you can setup the router with the correct settings. Then you would have to somehow get their router to disconnect and so yours can connect instead.

But they would soon be found out when next door report issues with their internet connection and an engineer is sent out.

Most connections are set to default, so you know if its sky, talk talk or whatever so that's not an issue.

But yes it was never meant as a long term plan, but rather just to see if there was a connecion

Is your landlord also your next door neighbour? What type of property is it? If a flat, do you know who owns the freehold of the building? Is there a route to run a new phone line from the closest telegraph pole to your property without going through your neighbours?

I'd be surprised if a landlord could actively prevent you from having a phone line installed (which is exactly the sort of thing you'd expect a tenant to do). Your neighbour may well be within their rights to prevent you access to their property though, even if they also happen to be your landlord.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.

I know of several examples of neighbours sharing a single broadband router - between floors with the upstairs flat, or next door in a semi or a conversion if the internal walls are stud partitions, blockwork or even brick.

Works well in Victorian or early/mid 20th Century converted properties, but probably not in modern stuctures with steel beams or concrete slabs with metal reinforcing rods (Faraday cage, Doh!).

So maybe, as an interim solution, check which is the strongest wifi, ask around then go in with tea and cake, or even offer to split their costs?

I do this in a holiday flat where we don't have our own line, and my neighbour's TalkTalk wifi is stronger than my home BT routers', even through the wall! In a previous flat the wifi penetrated the suspended floorboards and plasterboard ceilings perfectly...
