No internet access at rental

When renting my current property I asked my LA several times if it had a working bt line and if it was possible to get phone/internet (as there are 2 Ethernet sockets in my property) and i was told yes each time
I had BT come out on Friday and it turns out the BT lines are actually just an extension of my neighbours/landlords line, and the engineer said he would need access to their property to activate it. They are refusing to let anyone even when i offered to arrange it at the best time for them. The landlord then said they never told the LA it came with phone/internet capabilities.

Where can I go from here? I agreed tenancy on the basis I could get phone/internet set up but now it seems I can't.

What does your contract say? Do you have anything in writing from the agent?

Unfortunately nothing in the agreement about phone line / internet access.

I'm just a little annoyed at the LA. It wasn't a passing comment and I asked them to make sure with the landlord that I definitely could get phone and internet here, which they confirmed with me verbally before I signed the agreement

If you don't have anything in writing and there's no mention of a working phone line in the tenancy agreement then there's no a lot you can do about it.

You could investigate alternatives such as mobile or satellite internet connections.

What will BT charge for installing a new line to the property? Would the landlord be willing to contribute towards that cost?

The monthly cost for those are extortionate and they have data caps anyway which won't really work for m4

If there's nothing I can do I'll speak to the LL tonight and see if they're okay with me getting my own line fitted into the ground instead of their house

most providers will install a new line FOC - and more often than not they can use the existing points already there.

Unless it's some half a**ed flat conversion, which is quite plausible by the sound of it.

So your phone line is physically connected to your neighbours/landlords line?.

You should plug a phone into it and when it rings pick up the phone and say "sorry to intrude on your conversation but i need to talk to you about getting my own phone line". I bet they would soon let someone in to sort it out then! :rotfl:

    Agreed:T

I felt things werent quite "normal" when I moved here re my phoneline and there was some odd sorta hodgepodge set-up going on.

So I went on and on and on and on.....etc..........to my chosen Internet provider until I had a "normal" type phoneline and Internet connection and "sorta connected neighbour" had to accept I was going to be persistent until I got "Normal mode".
