Wow that's a crap law, especially as it's a fault I had no hand in.

Also, the hire a table thing is nonsense. I didn't come here for that. Just help.
The furniture shop are being totally unreasonable. They should refund you the full amount, add on £100 compensation for your hurt feelings and send you a hamper.

Is that what you want to hear? Good. Glad to have been of help.

I'd also take what they offered. A decent shop would have given you a full refund, so just remember this one in any future purchases.

You've had help, you didn't like the answers, unfortunately.

Taken them to the financial ombudsman for doing something that the law entitles them to do?

In this case it may be the Furniture Ombudsman that is meant?

I've got to admit though that my first thought was ... how is the Foreign Office going to help? :D

Simple. If it's proven that the fault is that of the manufacturer (which it was) and it can't be replaced (they don't sell it anymore) or fixed (they wouldn't as that'd cost too much) then they should issue a full refund within the 6 years written in law already. It's not hard.

I do think, for the sake of £10 and after finding it was their fault, they are being a bit petty.

But surely you can see your solution is not viable. Currently the law allows for fair deductions for use of the item (and takes into account how long an item is expected to last), which makes sense.

If you buy a TV and in 5 years time it breaks, you find out it has an inherent fault. Do you really think you should get a full refund? Lifespan of a TV isn't realistically over 10 years (cue all the people with their 25 year old CRT's), so you've had half the use of it, surely that shouldn't be free? That's what they've done here, but clearly a much smaller amount due to the length of time expected to be remaining on a table

Did you come for only answers you agree with?
In what version would you have a 'hand in a fault'?

Other posters have, why pose the question if you didn't want to hear the answer.
  • Ten smackers would not last five minutes inn the Wobbleade emporium, but is better than a smack on the chin!
  • You can't please some people.
  • At £10 for 7 months of use doesn't that mean they are estimating the lifespan of that table to be just over 16 years? Sounds a bit over optimistic to me!

What they are doing is legal but not great customer service. You could ask them nicely to replace it on a like for like basis, but you might want to go somewhere else and find something of better quality instead. If I were you I would politely let them know that you're not happy with their offer, and that you want a refund in full due to the inconvenience. If you don't get it, leave them an appropriate review - or maybe try asking them about it on social media first.

Homeserve furniture repairs are a different company to the boiler repair people, not that it really matters...
