    Thanks for the replies, everyone. Amazingly the guy agreed it was defective and gave me a refund! I'll be taking it to a proper Samsung shop tomorrow. Result!

    It will be interesting to see what they say, they might not touch it due to it being repaired out of the official network.

    No, they were fine about it - said the bad repair had only been to the screen, not the inner workings, so they've put a genuine one on, run a diagnostic and all is well!
