Short term contract as opposed to temp working? NHS

Must admit I'm not a fan of short term contracts - worst of both worlds IMHO. Same pay yet often none of the advantages of being permanent.

Wife is currently a nurse. She does "Bank" shifts. Plenty of flexibility- you can work when you want so its easier for childcare. You do get accrued leave also so don't lose out there.

Negatives are pay is no more than a normal perm (dont get me started on that one!) and no sick pay. No shift no pay basically. And the admin side with timesheets/booking codes can be hassle.

Been offered a fixed term contract part-time. Of course, pay is same but how does a fixed term in the NHS compare with perm? I assume you get holiday pay but now sick pay too?

Of course, one disadvantage is, if you say you sign a 22.5 hour a week contract then they're basically going to tell you which three days you're working in a week. With bank, you get to choose when you work. Same with holidays of course.

Want two weeks - just don;t book anything. Work part-time - got to ask and fit in with everyone else.

Anyone got experience of?

Experience of zero hours and part time contracts - sure. It's great if it works for you.

    Thanks for the info.....

Still not sure if the addition of sick pay is enough to deal with the loss of flexibility you get with bank then.

You mention about the bank rate being same and everyone would do it. I work in IT as a contractor. Same sort of thing, short term, no work, no pay, no sick pay. No pension, no holiday pay even. BUT I get paid (and take home). about 2.5x what someone sitting next to me does.

Its funny though - a lot still won't do contracting and prefer a perm job. There has never been a mass exodus....
  • Is she actually getting to work !!!8220;when she wants!!!8221; or just a mixture of when she!!!8217;s needed/when she!!!8217;s available?

Lived with agency nurses, good pay, irregular hours when they wanted to work.

Working more then 12 weeks she will have the same rights as everyone else.

Well that's because you're a contractor, you're self employed and dictate your pay.

Your wife is free to do that too. Bank is not contractor. Bank fills gaps for sickness, holiday etc.

There's a difference between highly specialised but often not needed work like IT and Highly specialised and always needed work like nursing.

+ the NHS pension is pretty good too.....

    Horses for courses.
It's easier to get a mortgage with a permanent job.
Some people don't like the insecurity (have you been a contractor during recssions/bad times or only good ones?)
Clearly there's a downside if you are long term sick especially if as a permie you get permanent health insurance (potentially pay until retirement).

My husband is a contractor (ltd company not IR35) and he spends quite a lot of time doing VAT returns, tax returns, dividend payments, dealing with accountants and keeping up on the legislation to maximise returns.
I guess that's not for everyone.

Just another forum bully, you don!!!8217;t like someone else having knowledge and sharing it.

No wonder this forum gets hardly any posts, people are sick of the bullies
  • As I can!!!8217;t quote you Comms I was talking about my housemates experience as an agency nurse, not a bank nurse.

And I made a valid point about sick.

What knowledge? What expertise do you have? You have repeatedly posted inaccurate information, which you then backtrack and call "personal opinion" instead. There are plenty of boards on here where you can post your personal opinions on a wide range of topics but certain boards, including this one, require informed advice, preferably backed up by at least a working knowledge of the pertinent laws.
