V5C log book address is different than my license address uk

Can any one guide me here?. I moved my address. I understand my license needs to reflect the new address and I am going to apply for that to show it to my current address, but my V5C log book for the car is on my relative address which is different than where I live now. But, I want to keep that address for couple of reasons. Is this fine to do it?

1. Is it compulsory to keep my license address and v5c log book address same? or is it illegal to have them on separate addresses? Please confirm. I want to keep the license at the new address where I live as photo ID is always perfect piece of authorized document to change other addresses, but not sure about v5c document. SO, I would like to keep V5c log book address at my relative address. I really do not want to do licence address change unless until I really must have to do it.

2. Based on that, my insurance document for the car. I will the change the insurance document to my new address or do i need to have it similar to what i have on my V5c Log book i.e. on my relative address?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

You need to tell the insurers where you live and where your car is kept overnight/most of the time. You should change the address on the V5 so you get reminders for tax, parking and speeding fines to where you live so you can deal with them. Also if you were to have a total loss your insurers may well query why you havent updated the V5 to reflect where the car is kept.

The DVLA can fine you up to £1000 if you dont update the address as well, not sure in what circumstances they would fine you but that it what is stated on the V5

Why exactly do you want separate addresses - it could cause all sorts of issues (Insurance - is the vehicle kept at the registered address overnight etc etc)

What you're proposing is unwise but probably not illegal

For sure my relative will inform me if there are any tickets pcn etc. The property i am moved to is a renting and i have a parking permit to that property which can be used for now and is safer there.

So my understanding is i can keep license and v5c book address different. I will do insurance an and licence on my new address and the v5c on my relative address. Does this look ok?

    Kind regards,

You NEED to be honest with your insurer as to where the car is kept overnight, especially if your relative lives in a "nicer" area than you. That does not have to be the same address as on the V5C.

The address on V5C and licence do not have to be your actual, current address - or the same as each other. They only have to be a valid postal address via which you can be reached quickly - and they have to be in the UK.

Thanks Adrian and others. This is perfect. I will be honest with my insurer.

So in summary, this is what I will do now:

    a. V5C log book on My relative address
    b. Driving license on my living address
    c. Insurance can be any address, but better be safe to discuss with my insurer.

    I have two more queries:

    1. What about road tax
The road tax that I pay, do I need to do it same as V5C address address. Sorry for being silly here.

    2. V5C log book is on my relative address but license on my living address, so Any PCN/ticketing etc, I will get on my relative address?

    Many thanks,

    c. Where is the car actually parked overnight the majority of the time ? You are giving the insurers wiggle room come claim time.

    1. Road tax reminders will be sent to the V5 address, that is where the car is registered.

    2. Again where the car is registered so that is where any correspondence regarding the car will be sent.

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes, because no-one knows who the driver is.

No, this NEEDS to be your actual "living address", assuming that's where the car is kept.

    Many thanks,

I am parking in the night at my living address but in the morning to afternoon, to my relative (close to my work place station), where it parks for whole day.

    1. Road tax reminders, so that does not require explicit addres changing, as V5C document is on my relative.

    3. And for MOT: The MOT address needs to be changed as well? My MOT is due in April next year, so I will just do the MOT and add the updated address there at that time? Correct me if I am wrong.

    Many thanks once again

Your insurer needs to know where the car is kept at night, not where it's parked during the day!

You don't have your address on the MOT! You would know that if you just had a look at it
