WiFi printer won’t connect

It’s an Epson XP-422. I’ve had it for years but now it won’t connect. I’ve tried resetting to default and going through the WiFi set-up wizard again. When I print off the check report, it shows everything as a ‘Pass’ except the ‘Security key/Password check’ which shows as a Fail. It also says that the signal strength is low. This doesn’t make any sense because my WiFi has strong signal where it is. It always used to show full signal bars but now is gets hardly any signal, even if I move it to right beside the router.

Could anyone advise me what to do in idiot-proof terms? I’m not good with technical things. Is it just broke? Do I need to buy a new one? I remember this thing wasn’t cheap and I’ve just spent money on new ink for it.

I don’t think so. I tapped the ‘Plusnet xxxx’ one on the list. The neighbours have BT.

Do one of your neighbours have Plusnet as well? Maybe there are multiple Plusnet named networks. Make sure it is definitely connecting to your router. Double check the exact name of the network it should be connecting to. Changing your network name to something other than the default one definitely helps in making sure you connect to the correct one.

Can you plug the printer into your computer with a USB cable and print that way until you get the wireless bit working?

This usually means the password for the WiFi in the printer is wrong. If you've changed the Wifi password for Plusnet then it will no longer match the one on the side of the box.

That being said, Easiest thing to do is grab the EpsonNet Config tool from here to reconfigure it:

It could be that whilst your wifi is strong in your house it is on the same channel as a neighbour's wifi which is equally as strong in that location so your printer is unable to talk to your wifi network. I had a client who couldn't connect to the router in the same room with his laptop because the entire village was on Channel 11 which most wifi routers default to so all the laptop wifi was receiving was a mish mash of signals from multiple routers on the same channel. Changed the channel and his problem went away.

I don’t have a laptop or anything. All I have is an iPad. I don’t know what those drivers are but I don’t think I can use that without a computer.

Recently I got a new router from Plusnet but the printer connected to it at first. Now it won’t.

PS. I hate printers... BUT think you need to reset the printer first...

I’ve managed to get it to connect using the Epson live chat. I had to press ‘WAP’ on the router first which still didn’t work but then it suddenly connected a few minutes later.

The only problem now is the signal strength. It’s very weak. But it works so I’m not too concerned.

Do I need to press the WAP button on the router again to turn that off or anything? Is it a security risk? It didn’t require a password for me to connect once I pressed that.

I think you mean WPS and no you don't need to press it again (unless you use a different printer or ipad or iphone...)

If you're talking about WPS, the button works on a timer. It causes the router to start listening for something looking to connect; anything in range that happens to be looking for a router to connect to will be allowed to do so without having to enter a passkey. After two minutes, it stops listening.

It's a little like Bluetooth pairing in that both devices have to be looking for one another at the same time for it to work.
