Problem with locks on Iveco van

Hello, having an issue with the back door locks on the work van.

A couple of weeks ago, we found we couldn't open the back door from outside (I am sure it was unlocked). We managed to open it from inside, but then when we came to open it again we couldn't budge it from inside or outside.

Van went off to Iveco garage, back door lock replaced, still felt a bit stiff but usable.

Then one night we found that the door wouldn't close: there seemed to be something stopping it. Decided to switch the engine off, and after a couple of minutes the door was ok to close and lock. All OK for the rest of the evening.

It's remained very stiff, and being able to open, close and lock from inside is critical to the way we use it, so I phoned the garage to ask for advice, and they thought that it might be us fiddling with the keyfob was causing problems. But bring it back if we still had a problem.

So we went to experiment. Unfortunately, at this point we found that whatever we did, we could not open the back doors from inside. The handle just won't 'lift' far enough. We can lock it, unlock it, get out of the side door and walk round and open it, BUT we can't open it from inside.

Apart from taking it back to the garage (or getting rid ...), any suggestions? Is WD40 likely to be of any use before we do that?

Door could be bent, mechanism could be seized due to lack of maintenance.

Thanks. I guess either of those is possible, but when you say 'mechanism could be seized' are you talking about the lock, or something on the door?

Because it's a brand new £400 lock which we haven't had time to fail to maintain!

Something on the door, I'm trying to picture the Iveco rear door mechanism.

Thanks. We have had some issues with the back door before all this started, and it all seemed to have settled down again. Until it hadn't.

Central locking? If so does it operate the rear doors also?
Possible it should not open with the engine running.

Had anything bump into the door on the inside? Any damage to the door?

Control rods bent? Thats my guess.

Yes, there is central locking, but there are three buttons: one is side doors only, one is lock everything, and the other is either open back door only or open all doors: would have to double check which!

I agree we probably don't want it to open with the engine running, although we often 'sit' with the ignition on but the engine NOT running. However atm we can't open in any situation.

There's been no central rear impact on the back doors, outside I'm sure about, inside it's unlikely: everything is stowed away tidily. We have had a few 'whoops is that where the back corner is?' problems with people reversing, and the replacement rear light fittings to prove it, but nothing recent.

Control rods - on the door?

Damage to the door? Well, I said we'd had a few problems a while back, the D-ring which the central door catch snaps around became detached from the door, rivets popped. Got that replaced and all seemed well, but now I'm wondering ...

Thanks for suggestions. Have only just started using this garage, and I suspect they are more used to offering fleet services, where SOMEONE at the van end will know their way around.

So is it something a competent garage should be able to identify, sort and fix reasonably easily, or is this likely to be a nightmare? Just wondering ...

  • Sorry can't help you but them Ivecos, jeez. I loaned the works Iveco van and had issues with the side door locking.

I borrowed another Iveco van from work on another occasion and had another issue with the locking.

I've borrowed them both on other occasions and they've been fine but i'm not a fan. They always seem to be in the garage getting repaired.

Engine-wise, we've been perfectly happy. And the recommendation came from someone who runs a fleet of them.

We do use the back door a lot, and I'm wondering if people grab the top of the door as they're leaping on and off ... there is a step fitted and I think a grab handle, but I'm just wondering if people don't USE the grab handle ...

Well, I got the van out there this afternoon so we'll see what they find.
