Brown has been mentioning the 'R' word as well now. Think your not far off the mark gordylad. If it comes to rest around where it is now or even a bit lower, the USA is still a very cheap place to go on holiday.
  • Is the recommendation to buy today as the rate will probably go down?

DO NOT get any of your money from the airport either end of your trip - the rate will always be lower than it is online or in high street stores.

It's worth calling up your bank and see what their currency rates are & how they are decided on a day-to-day basis as quite a few banks go by/almost go by the actual currency rare instead of the 'tourist rate' which is always a bit less.

I personally would advise changing over £500 online (travelex or thomas global exchange) then withdraw large amounts of cash from the ATM to spend out there.

I ordered some money from Travelex on Wed to pick up at airport last night (so glad I did). I ordered at 1.68 and when I picked up last night, their normal rate was 1.44! The cashier was saying that many people just turn up and take the rubbish on-the-day rate. Madness

Becaues the recession word was used last might by King the pound is down almost 4 cents today. No recovery short term and I expect it to go below 1.5 in the coming weeks probably bottom out at around 1.40.

How confident are you that the $ will continue to drop to levels such as 1.5 and even 1.4?, I know this is going against the grain on here but I am sat on a lot of $'s and want to change them back to sterling.

Also who offers the best rates for converting £ to $??

    Thanks

He isn't confident, he's guessing like everyone else on this thread.

If I were you though I would hold on to them a bit. But its a gamble. If you cash in now you will have made a tidy profit already so it depends upon how greedy you are I guess.

It could go up or down.

Going to NYC In late Dec and soooooooo glad I changed my $ up 4 weeks ago! Was umming and arring over it, but bit the bullet and changed it up 4 weeks ago. I got a rate of 1.82 - and considering how awful the rate is now, I am giving myself a jolly good pat on the back for that!!

    In regards to who gives the best rates for £ to $;

try going to MSE's currency comparison page, http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/

Personally I would say either Travelex(co.uk) or Thomas Global Exchange for online... High street probably Tesco or M&S I would say.

FYI - the dollar has already dropped to 1.58 and probably alot lower than that if you went to your high street store. All time low..!
  • Going to the US in just under 4 weeks.
Would it be better to get my dollars now as it is unlikely it will rise again before i go?
or wait as it might get better?

Is there a chance the pound might get slightly stronger within the next 4 weeks?
