06:21 GMT - [GBP HAS THE DATA AND THE MARKET] Just about everyone in Europe is off bar London. As a result, the UK is the sole interest on today's calendar, with Mar consumer credit (Gbp 0.1bln forecast), mortgage approvals (40k f/c), money supply and manufacturing PMI (40.0 f/c) to come.

  • 09:40 01May09 UK March mortgage lending weak, little sign of QE effect

LONDON, May 1 - British mortgage lending grew by less than half as much as expected in March, while mortgage approvals were also slightly below forecast, the Bank of England said on Friday.

The central bank also published a breakdown of broad M4 money supply growth for the first month since it began its policy of quantitative easing which showed little sign that households and businesses are seeing the extra cash being pumped into the system.

The annual growth rate of M4 excluding other financial corporations fell to 2.5 percent, its lowest since records began in 1998.

It may still be too soon to judge the effectiveness of the policy but the figures may boost speculation the BoE will decide to use the additional 75 billion pounds that the government has authorised for its asset purchase scheme.

Friday's figures showed that mortgage lending rose by 757 million pounds in March, less than half the 1.6 billion pound rise expected by analysts and the weakest rise since August 2008.

Approvals for home loans were also slightly weaker than forecast at 39,230, although this was the highest since May 2008.
