[Sterling Briefing]
[10:20 GMT April 22] Cable extended south to test 1.4520 bids after the 08:30GMT
disclosure of UK unemployment, earnings and public finance figures (<TGM42332>),
alongside minutes from the April 8/9 BoE MPC meeting (<TGM42331>). The pound was
already under pressure into the data and minutes release, on the back of heavily
underperforming gilts and a rise in the 5-year UK Sovereign Credit Default Swap.
Fresh buying of the pound from a major UK corporate has been flagged as a
factor in the one cent recovery rally from 1.4520. The same name, one of world"s
leading energy companies, was also tipped as a GBP buyer yesterday.
EUR/GBP was helped to a high of 0.8908 by news of a "tentative plan" for a
E12bn bid for the wine and spirits arm of LVMH from Diageo (Daily Telegraph).
UK Chancellor Alistair Darling will unveil his budget from 11:30GMT, after
PMQs. Darling will issue GBP 200bn worth of gilts this financial year--GBP 50bn
more than the UK DMO estimated last month, according to the FT. The number of UK
biz leaders detecting "green shoots" of economic recovery has risen to 29%, from

The pound has also been hurt by worse-than-expected Q1 earnings figures from
Morgan Stanley. Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

[13:16 GBP/USD: Reclaimed 1.46 Handle Lost on Darling"s FX View] London, April
22. Cable lost its briefly reclaimed 1.46 handle on the back of UK Chancellor
Alistair Darling"s view that a competitive GBP exchange rate will help UK
exporters, with 1.4570 marking the European afternoon/NY session low-to-date.
Darling is unveiling his budget to the House of Commons.
GBP/USD plumbed a 24-year low of 1.3500 in Q1 (Jan 23). EUR/GBP posted a
