April 17.
Cable tripped sell stops below 1.4848 (today"s Asian session base),
1.4822 (Wednesday"s low) and 1.4800 en route to a four-day low of 1.4790 in early
European trade, with Swiss bank selling touted as the catalyst. 1.4944 was
today"s early Asian session high (pre-Tokyo open). 1.4946 was the traded high
yesterday afternoon (BST).
The greenback is benefitting from ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet"s
"appreciate US comments that strong USD in its interests" comment (Reuters).
Outgoing BoE MPC member David Blanchflower has warned that UK unemployment is
likely to top three million by the end of this year, and that there is a "good
chance it could much higher still" (Daily Mirror/Reuters). Blanchflower will
leave the MPC at the end of May. His replacement, David Miles, yesterday said
that he is "guardedly optimistic" about the UK economy (Western Mail).
1.5000 and 1.5100 option strikes roll off at today"s 10am Eastern NY cut
(14:00GMT). Sterling scaled a three-month peak of 1.5069 in Asia yesterday.
