There are crossbows and there are crossbows - and one that is powerful enough to pierce a metal drum is not a toy.

Remember when someone fired a crossbow bolt into the Oval cricket ground some time ago? Police firearms response teams were there in minutes.

You're sources in that text aren't the best.

The crossbows act covers sale and possession and the offensive weapons act would not apply in his own garden.

If we were talking about crossbow Joe staying within the bounds of his own garden then OP wouldn't have a problem.

Go on then explain how, he already owns the bow so the crossbow act won't apply. Offensive weapon is other than in the place of his abode.

Get a hosepipe ready and next time he's shooting bolts give him a blast with the water, say you are just doing your own target practice and can't help it if he gets soaked.

Shall we get ready for another thread to be hijacked due to AndyMc's penchant for pedantry and obliquely discussing the minutiae of legislation*, thereby not actually helping the OP? ;):D

    * i.e. what someone says may be wrong, but he won't spell it out - he'll give oblique references that don't help anyone at all.

A slight tangent, but does anyone know whether it is legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow in York?

I'm inquiring from an academic point of view, rather than a "I'm going to York tomorrow to shoot a Scotsman" point of view.

Whereas your post is full of helpful hints, tips and suggestions for the OP....

No. You cannot go around shooting people Scottish or not.

Nope - all those ancient legal oddities were rounded-up and nullified in a legal clean-up back in John Major's time as PM.

    Ah ok!

That "rule" does the rounds on social media every so often.
