LEZ Penalty Charge

Hi all,
Hoping I can get some help with an LEZ penalty charge.
Long story short, I drove my van in the LEZ without realising what the LEZ is or that I needed to pay. I received a £500 penalty, increasing to £1,000 if not paid within 28 days. I appealed within 28 days of receiving it which should have frozen the penalty.
TFL rejected my appeal, so I appealed to an independent tribunal. TFL contested my appeal to the independent tribunal, and the adjudicator has ruled in TFL's favour.
Now, when they ruled in TFL's favour, they told me that I am required to pay £1,000.
As much as a £500 penalty for driving in the LEZ is a total joke, it's even more of a joke that it has gone up to £1,000 during this appeals process. At this point I just want to pay the £500 and be done with it, but I'm not sure how I go about doing that when they've decided to ramp it up to £1,000?
I called the independent tribunal the other day and was told I have to speak to TFL. They're closed right now so thought I'd post here first to see if anyone has any advice about what to do in this situation.
Any advice greatly received and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Council tickets are best dealt with via PePiPoo, as we tend to major on private parking tickets here. Register there (but please note that a hotmail address won't work) and post a new thread; here's your link:
http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=30
Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate) as they need to see all the small print.
PePiPoo has an excellent success record in dealing with council tickets.
HTHPlease note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

I guess it's extortionate because they'd rather not have vehicles polluting London and causing even more deaths. You do realise how bad the air quality is in some spots in London, don't you?0

Thanks a lot, I'll try there.Coupon-mad wrote: »If you've lost at adjudication, you must pay the full amount. I don't think pepipoo will tell you any different (rip off though this extortionate penalty is).
Thanks - I appreciate that but the full amount should be £500, not £1,000. It has gone up to £1k during the appeals process which shouldn't be the case.I guess it's extortionate because they'd rather not have vehicles polluting London and causing even more deaths. So you don't drive a vehicle or do anything else in life that pollutes the air, then?
@joobny:
No, the full amount is ALWAYS the £1000 penalty sum, NEVER the discount.
It was not £500 - that was the bribe not to appeal an dthis is the same with all PCNs.
It has not 'gone up'. The penalty was a grand.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

I think you have that the wrong way round.
I believe you received a £1000 penalty, which was reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days (not 28 days).
As you didn't pay the £500 within the prescribed timescale, and all appeals have failed, you currently owe the amount of the original penalty which was £1000.0 -
Thorsson has not said he drives a train, just given the impression of a train spotter/buff.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Not a train spotter or buff; transport consultant. I'm not an air pollution expert, but I work with people who are.0
