Agree with the above I wouldn't worry too much they are probably just a bit worried about the account being used as a betting accounts

i am sure that they will realise there's nothing illegal going on and either tell you that you can't use the account as a betting account or just allow it to continue

There is nothing more to the story at all.. Every penny can be accounted for. My point that I am asking is if anybody is aware of the next steps? Whether once we confirm with our ID then accounts will be opened again or whether there will be further things to do.

I would be surprised if there wasn't more to the story.

You loaned someone (who opened up a new account for the activity) money to do matched betting. This is pretty business-like, because someone distinctly set up a new account for the sole purpose of carrying out the activity and you trasnferred money solely for that purpose.

You then recalled X amount of that in order to book a holiday.

Holidays can be booked for as little as £50 pp, which is an amount someone who separates personal and matched betting funds could afford through personal money only (ie there is no reason to draw money from your "business" account/recall debts). Or did you recall a large chunk of the amount you had loaned? If a large chunk, I'm sure you can appreciate why it looks a bit dodgy... The bank thinking one thing (money laundering) and the betting companies thinking the other thing (circumventing the Ts and Cs).

Ultimately, you should be fine with the bank once ID is produced by both parties. I hope they'd pass on the info to the gambling company though, as it would be fairly easy for them to determine whether or not you are breaching the Ts and Cs (or whether you are two separate entities).

How much did you transfer back and forth ? This activity is typical of money laundering which will be why they're investigating it. You haven't done anything wrong but at the moment your bank doesn't know this so are suspicious. It's a waiting game now to see what they will do, no-one here can tell you.

If they suspect money laundering, surely they have 'tipped off' one party:cool:

    Hi,

My step father recently opened up a Barclays Bank account so he could start some matched betting through it. I had lent him some money across from my bank account to his bank account as he was going to use it for matched betting, he started using it and then I decided I would like to book a holiday so needed some money back. We could not book it from his card as I was the lead person for the booking so he tried to send me the money back so I could book the holiday from my card. The transaction was blocked and he called Barclays, they were asking him why I had sent money one week and he was sending it back the week later and lots of other questions like it was wrong what we had done. They then informed him it was going to be investigated by fraud people. They closed his account and said he needed to come to a branch with 2 forms of ID. They then closed my account 2 days later and said I also needed to go with him to the branch with 2 forms of ID. The next available day we can both go to branch together is next week..

Has anybody experienced anything like this before or know what might happen next? We have been made to feel like criminals but I cannot see a problem in what has been done?

Please help as when I am looking online I am seeing comments from people who say that they will close both our accounts and then they will put a CIFAS marker on them and all other accounts will be closed? But we have done nothing illegal or wrong?

    Thanks in advanced..

The bank will have automated fraud detection systems in place and the transfers you did probably tripped them.

If banks have see behaviour that might be fraudulent and they don't investigate it then they can be held liable and can be prosecuted.

Hi, very good point, you have to see things from thier side.

They may already know thats theres nothing wrong with what the op has done but still as you say they have to investigate.

Yes totally understand that from the banks POV it looks suspicious and they have to check up on it but just not nice when you're in that situation with them and being made to feel like a criminal when you've done nothing wrong.

Also suppose it confirms the fact that mine and my step fathers money is in a safe place because if it wasn't my step father trying to make the transaction and somebody else had accessed his account then the banks had picked up on it.

We are planning to go to branch tomorrow with the ID and fingers crossed they just unblock the accounts there and then so I can continue using my card and my account!!

I suspect the OP's holiday was going to cost rather more than £5.
