    It was a nice concept. The problem seams to be the urgency behind it all leading to poor design, safety, security.

    If they had rolled it out when meters needed replacement until confidence was gained it would have been better.

    But the govement want to fine suppliers.

    I guess this is to save building new power stations.
  • Did I hear correctly that legislation has just been passed that requires all installations of domestic electric vehicle charging points to use "off peak" electricity?

    The idea is to avoid the double whammy of consumers arriving home from work, putting the car(s) on charge and cooking the evening meal. In winter there is barely enough capacity to supply the early evening peak demand, let alone the EV increased demand.

    Given the foul up over gen 1 smart meters, and some suppliers (EDF for example) claiming to not be able to supply Economy 7 smart meters, how on earth do the Government expect it all to work when sales of new diesel and petrol cars are banned?

    They will save everyone a lot in the future, as eventually all suppliers will insist on them as standard, and operate dual pricing, wont have one, fine, we will move you onto a more expensive non-smart tariff then!!

    ...and that will require truly interchangeable SMETS ver X meters and a working DCC -beginning to doubt that it will happen in my lifetime (#20 years more hopefully!!)
  • The only thing the smart meter does is cut out the middle man (Meter Reader) and you pay for it!

    Some people have to go outside in the pouring rain to read their meters.

    I've struggled to find a rainy day to take my readings the past few weeks.

    If you don’t take a reading soon you’ll end up with an estimated bill;

    …they’re forecasting thundery showers in Shropshire all day on Friday so I would do it then.

    You may not get another chance for weeks. :money:

    It really isn't difficult to lock out a car charging station until off peak times. It has nothing to do with availability of E7 tarriffs etc. The car charger simply won't work between set hours when demand is highest.

    That is probably far too easy and sensible, daveyjp, to say nothing of less lucrative to parasitic energy companies.
