moving from Virgin broadband

If after bargaining with Virgin, I still decide to move to a new ISP, can I still retain my Virgin email address for receiving mail only via Outlook Express?

I've just told Virgin where to stick their cable having had my bill jump from £37 a month to £48. The guy on the phone wasn't really interested inkeeping my business just told me that the deal I had sorted in March wasn't valid as the bloke who had arranged it had combined 2 offers and he wasn't allowed to do this. Apparently this is now my problem not theirs!

Anyhoo, having arranged a disconnection date I decided to phone BT to arrange for one of their phones and, despite having a BT phone in here 7 years ago, we no longer have a BT line and so that's £125 please to reconnect.

If I pay this £125, am I tied to a contract with BT or can I immediately sign over to a Sky bundle? Or is their a cheaper/better way of doing this whole thing? I can't really afford to be without a broadband connection as I make money with it.
  • Hi,

I am in the process of switching from ntl/virgin to BT and sky.

We haven't had a BT line for at least 6 yrs but it was still active. Did they check the line? We still have the BT box but the ntl phone was run off it.

We didn't have to pay anything. Just set up DD and they connected us within about 3 days. I arranged this b4 virgin cut us off. Sky connect pretty quickly I think but we are waiting for an extension to be built b4 they can install the tv - they did send the BB box and said it wouldn't work til the sky tv was connected ....but I'm on it now!

Oh if you go on the basic BT and then go 3 for £26 with sky or whatever offer you want and sky do some phone packages in that price.

Good luck (virgin told me my deal wasn't doable either!)

Hi MSW, yes she tested the line. The thing is, about 3 years ago the BT cable became blew away from one of its supports in high winds and was left danging about 7feet in the air. When the BT 'engineer' came round he decided to disconnect it rather than fix it back up, so WE have to pay for his slackness!

I'm not sure how much I am going to be saving by going over to Sky/BT anyway. Just a rough calculation their broadband/TV/phone/sports (yes I really NEED it) deal is coming in at £35 + £11 for BT. Which is £2 cheaper than Virgin and I would get free evening calls, but I get Setanta with Virgin and this £125 bill from BT is what is really holding me back. That's 63 months before I see my money back!
  • Hi,

I got to the point where I would rather pay more than stay with Virgin.
We had a knock on the door one evening to find 2 policemen they said we had made an abandoned 3 9s call and they had tried to phone us but the line was engaged. This happened a couple more times cos of some kind of fault.

I got so fed up with speaking to the Indian call centre and being on hold etc that I too told them what to do with their service!!

Oh I also miss Lost too!

    Good luck!

I can hardly see the justification for slagging the BT engineer for not refixing the line.

Look at it logically, you do not pay for BT phone line for over 3 years, you do not use the line, you are customer of a rival company and as far as they know you will never be a BT customer again, yet you expect BT to have physic powers to see 3 years ahead when you wish to return to BT and meantime they should waste their time & money repairing a fault on line you may never use in your life

For clarity I am a BT shareholder and thus have a vested interest in them not wasting my money

Ahh a BT shareholder, welcome. Look, the guy was already there, he had the choice of fixing the line back up to the pole or disconnecting from our house. He took the slightly easier option. No, he didn't know whether we would sign back up to BT in the future, but he obviosly didn't think enough about his company to think that we might be tempted back in the future.

Having now been told to pay £125 I will probably stay with Virgin, whereas, with SLIGHTLY more effort from the BT engineer I would have resigned with BT this evening, so, a customer lost. Good business sense? You tell me.
