Being a learner, when seeing their exit is clear, and progressing slowly through the box its entirely possible some one cut over from the right lane and used the exit space.

It certainly is but equally it doesn't stop fines being issued if you stop. They are particularly harsh in London with some junctions being almost impossible to enter the yellow box and not stop.

OH got fined for being in box junction in London. Just before he entered junction he had had two spaces available at exit. It is a big box junction and just as he entered queuing traffic was moving on other side. A bus in the queuing traffic on opposite side, changed lanes into the first of the spaces and another car, already crossed and in separate queue, then darted into second space . Then traffic lights just ahead of queuing traffic on other side of junction changed to red and everything stopped OH had no exit anymore and was trapped in box junction and had to pay fine. I got caught in a box junction yesterday, it's easily done. There's one here, which has a set of lights, followed by a space which will comfortably accommodate 2 cars and then a box junction.

I was following another car, coming up to the lights which were red but no cars queuing. I followed the guy through the box junction knowing there was space for us both at the other side of it to wait at the lights.

Except this guy for whatever reason didn't pull all the way up to the line, leaving a car length in front of him and me stuck on the box junction. I'm inching closer and closer to his bumper and gave a toot but he wouldn't take the hint to move forward and sat there completely oblivious.

I'm just glad they don't enforce box junctions in this area.
