    I don't want to pay but given the facts, is this a charge which can be won?

    From experience yes but it will entail you waiting to see if you get a claim (they don't always) and then defending it on the poor signage.

    I understand this but I'm wary of leaving the charge essentially to chance (and cost £100s alongside the stress) when it could go away for £60...I hate these cowboys but I can't see how I can get out of this.

    The trick with all these companies is to make you think you are "in" it in the first place. If the signs were not clear nor understandable with regards to the effect of non-display, then you were never "in" it.
